Default Temp Guns - where do you aim?

i just bought an infrared/laser temperature gun and wondering where it's suppose to point at on the engine. i notice that there's about a 30-45F degree difference when i point it 1) straight down the head at the glow plug, and 2) at where the exhaust header and engine meet.

when the glow plug in the head reads 240F, the header/engine is about 300F.

what's correct?

At the glow plug is where you shoot for the engine temp. Of course the exhaust is hotter, just as taking the temps at the engine block behind the carb will be considerably cooler.

You need to aim it on the head as close to the plug as possible, pointing it right at the plug, the temps will be all over the map.
