what exactly does a fail safe do?
i kno it helps prevents run aways, but how does it work and where would it b installed............and i think i might need 1, thanxx

It's built in to a good receiver. If the signal is lost, the receiver will fake channels at either pre-programmed defaults, or just center everything. Without a failsafe, in a gas-powered system, the throttle servo could stay in its last position so if it was on to the max, you would end up with a runaway.

well i have an electric pede, and whenever the battery gets low, it takes off, lol...........and is it possible i can buy a failsafe and install it myself?

If you lose radio signal, it'll apply the brakes, (more or less depending on how you have it set)...... It's very easy to install, just plug your throttle/brake servo into one end, and the other end goes to the receiver...
edit.. dam you guys are quick, there was no posts when I posted lol...
didn't realize it was going onto a EP.. you do basically the same thing, just plug the esc into it instead...

For an electric vehicle you could also go with a better ESC. I'm assuming you have the stock XL-1 ESC. The better made ESCs (like Novak) have radio priority circuitry built into them so that the radio gear gets the required voltage without the motor draining it all. So no run aways.
