glow plug brass ring?

glow plug brass ring?
Does the little brass ring belong on the plug or underneath the bottom of the heat sink? When i got my Savage, the brass ring was underneath the head and that other metal piece when i disassembled it so i left it there. Should i put it on the plug then screw the plug on or just leave it where it came? It seems to run fine where it's at but i'm starting to get a groove around the top of the socket where the plug goes from putting the plug on and off so much.

It goes right underneathe the plug, it is what seals the plug to the head!! There is also one of these brass rings that is alot larger that rests under the head, but it seals the head to the crank case!!
