Recommendations for Beefier Tmaxx Diff
 

Hello all,
I was at the track last week and was nosing over on some of the jumps when I noticed the truck seemed it wouldnt get any traction to hit the jumps right. It appears I blew out my rear diff. I'm running the newer T-maxx replacement gears that were supposed to be stronger then the ones originally supplied with my first generation but they still blew out. I am running an OFNA .26 so I know the diff is taking a beating.

What could I do to strengthen the rear diff aside from going to a robinson setup. How about Locked Rear Diff and how would I go about it.....Pros/Cons?

Yeah if you are going that route for the rear diff on the TMAXX, I myself would just spool the rear instead of looking all over the place for more durable pinion, spider gears just eliminate less moving parts.

Where can I get a spool like that and how much? How do the handling characteristics change when you spool a rear end.

ya can purchase spools from TowerHobbies or other HS. The handling characteristics are surpurb more or less like a posi trac in a 1:1 car. Both of the rear wheels rotate same speed going straight or in a corner heres the link for the spool from Tower:

If you plan on racing your t maxx DONT put the spool in it!... I put the spool in my max last year and took it out after about a week. It works awsome for climbing but if you turn a corner under ANY decent power with the rear tires locked by a spool it will just spin out. I have a maxx with a rix gear starter box chassis and a OS.21CV in it (lots of power) and have yet to blow out a diff. Just be light on the trottle when it lands and the stock diff's will take alot of power!

Thanks, I'll check into it. I just remember having to push drag cars off of a drag strip with spools and they never turned very well as the front tires would sort of hop.

You need to beef up you diffs. This can be accomplished a couple of different ways.

1. You can get aluminum diff housings. This will eliminate case flex under loads.
2. Aluminum diff cups. I would suggest getting either the Maxximizer Cups, or the Kippster.
3. Go with the Supermaxx 7.5 Ultralite 1/8th scale diffs. This takes 1/8th scale buggy diffs and puts them in your maxx.

I went with options 1 and 2. I have the Supermaxx Ultralite Aluminum Diff housing, that use the stock Traxxas gears. Supermaxx is running a deal right now, that if you buy an Ultralite Housing you get a free Kippster 7075 Aluminum Diff Cup. The only thing you will need to do is either modify your Traxxas Ring gear, or buy a modified one from Kippster. They are modified to use 3mm screws to hold the ring gear to the cup, rather than the stock 2mm screws. That is the exspensive route but pretty much the best one. Rebuilding with Robinson gears isnt very exspensive and is very stout. Robinson gears and Kipster cups with an aluminum case will take care of you for good. Just using the robinson gears will do very well though. I wouldnt get the spool, it will handle like crap on the track.
