Spider diff mod gone bad
Heya all :D
Damn this spider gear diff mod. I recently noticed that my truck was having problems putting power to the back wheels. Top end was drastically reduced, and the front wheels seemed to baloon a lot easier than they used to. After ripping my diffs apart tonight, I found this... FROM: http://hq.i-oss.net/savage/10090001.JPG TO: http://hq.i-oss.net/savage/10090003.JPG So, what can I do about this? Just revert back to the standard two-gear diff for the rear? Do both the front and rear? Order some new shafts and wait? Get "daddy" to make me some new shafts at work? Get him to make an 'X' shaft or ten to do away with the need for seperate shafts? Any ideas are greatly appreciated :) Thanks. |

PS, I know the pics are crap but I'm starting to think it isn't just me blurring with my camera ;)
Either I'm severely caffeinne deprived, or my camera lens need cleaning... |
RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
Wow!
When you opened it up, was the diff oil still near the same level? The only way that you should get lateral forces on the pins is if the spiders were binding, or somehow the notches got out of alignment. How did the spiders and the other gears look? |
RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
How the He!! did you do that??

RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
what exalcy is the spider diff...mod?

RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
which part # is that?
|
RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
The spider diff mod is for the Savage. The Savage diff has 2 spider gears. What you do if use 4mm Ofna diff pins for the 9.5 pro and add 2 more spider gears. The pins have a slot in them and fit together allowing you to use 4 gears.I don't no how you managed to do that Aterlatus!!!!Are you sure you assembled the diff correctly?I have never seen that before!

RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
is their some way to do this to my maxx????

RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
I'm not sure? The Savage is a 1/8 so it's a little easier to do this mod since the diffs are almost identacle to most buggies.I'm sure if you dig around you could find a place that makes this for your Maxx. The Maxx has so many hop up parts so i'm sure someone makes it.

RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
I really don't know how it happened :(
I was out bashing, and all of a sudden I couldn't get power to my back wheels. When it didn't clear up on dry land (those hills were a bit muddy that day) I decided to rip it all apart and this was the result  I've got some new pins coming from savage central, but until then I've had to resort to the basic diff setup. Strange thing is, the problem is still there with the simple diff - one wheel rotates backwards freely without turning the other wheel, and only catches it occasionally when moving forwards :( All the diff oil had drained out of the diff too. No idea how it happened, but I've topped it up now anyway. I'll prolly be extra careful when the new pins turn up - make sure everything meshes nicely ;) |
RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
You may have over filled them and blew out the diff seal. With no lube I can see how that would break.Make sure you only fill the diff to the cross pin.I used some clear RTR along with the gaskets just to make sure it didn't leak out. Were those the Ofna pins or the Kyosho pins? They look like they are shiny chrone? My Ofna pins are solid black.

RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
I think they were the ofna ones - came in packs of two anyway...
I've ordered a set of the kyosho(?) now, in a pack of six. Should come in handy should I ever have the same problem again ;) |
RE: Spider diff mod gone bad
i too have seen this, I love my diff mod, did you make sure the little set screw was back in the diff case, or like rex said what did you fill the level of fluid to, only to the cross pins because the fluid will expand. and if you filled it you probably blew out the gasket as rex said.
