MT from scratch?

I am thinking of building my first Nitro MT from scratch. Not a kit, just all parts I pick. This will be my first build, but should keep me busy for a while. plus I tend to take a little more pride saying htat I created something. So, that leads to my question. I need a parts list. Can anybody help me out?

Like...get a MGT frame and slowly get MGT parts to put on it? Or just make a completely diffrent truck? [sm=confused.gif]

It probably won't vary much from a kit, but some parts I will upgrade right off the bat. So pretty much follow the format of a kit. I used to work at a shop that built custum harley's. basically you purchased a harley frame with a harley VIN and added all the other parts of your choice. could be factory or aftermarket. svaes the espense of buying the original part. like say I want a different body, or an upgraded motor. maybe different suspension. stronger chassis. whatever. this way, I don't pay for the original in the kit, I just pay for the upgrade. So yeah, I will have to pick a truck to start with. I like the HPI Savage, Team Associated Monster GT, CEN Fun Factor, and the Losi LST.

If your modifying a kit it is much cheaper to buy the basic truck ansd sale the parts you don't want. Building the basics from parts is way more expensive. really what your talking about is adding hop-ups to a basic kit which is very common in Monster trucks. With designs like the Revo you can go as far as your deep pockets allow.

I think its a great idea to build from scratch, I am currently doing the same using a spare CEN fun Factor chassis, Savage arms, buggy diffs etc. My only advise though would be to get a truck first and enjoy running that while you are building your 'custom' as a side project. There is so much you need but dont realise when you begin. Boring stuff like screw sets, brake systems, electronics housing, it could end up taking you years!!
If you are determined to start in rc this way though, I would start with something like a buggy chassis because they are very tough and have a host of compatible/ interchangable parts between brands. Hope this helps.

There are acouple of savage trucks for not too much in the classifieds. they need some work. $250 for a used savage? think i could get $250 worth of parts from a used truck? should I just skip used all together?

your going to end up spending more money doing this.. i would jsut get a kit. you can build it yourself and get your own radio/motor. just a thought

Sounds cool, but you may be further ahead (financially) to try to find a nice roller or beat used truck real cheap and then build form there. Buying all of the parts individually can get really expensive, but if you can finda cheap roller or a truck with a beat engine really cheap, you can shave off some of the initial expense. But that is only beneficial if you plan to utilize a bit of the stock parts.

I think your Going to Spend LESS Money on a Kit - With the Costum Parts ya want,
Than Just buying a Bunch of Parts and Trying to Make it your self, Plus Like someone else said before atlest you have something to Drive, Untill ya know what Parts ya want and what Parts will Work with each other,( To make the RC ya want )

easiest thing... build a tmaxx from pure aftermarket.. it can be done... and I've done it :D Just get the supermaxx, american cnc, or another skeleton, and go from there

I have a used rc10gt I picked up to drive for now. It will be my working toy. The custom MT will be more of a long term project. I figure a common truck like the T-maxxwill have the most parts available. thanks for the tip.

Lots of t-maxx rollers go on ebay. You can usually pick them up pretty cheap depending on how much of the electronics are going with them.

if you buy every thing seperate you will acually spend more money. plus you get spare parts when you buy a RTR and the upgrade it.
