DuraTrax Warhead
Well, being the rookie that I am I have not yet had a chance to do a full search on the following topic, so please bare with me. A while back I picked up a used original (not Evo) WH. This past weekend, I was doing some off road & slammed into a good size rock. It had turned off but, I restarted it back up again with no problems. The thing is that when I restarted the WH it didn't move/run forward or backward. Did I tank the transmission / clutch? Any & all help is greatly appreciated.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
joe, did you check if the forward/reverse linkage was somewhere in-between? with the motor running, check for moving driveline parts. clutch spin? spur gear spin? front or rear driveshaft spin? look for parts not spinning that should be. then let us know if your still at a loss;)

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
The servo does engage forward & reverse smoothly but, it doesn't drive. I checked for any loose links, screws, gear breakage as you've stated and nothing. I started it again with no problems. There's a gear in front of the carburetor that moves freely but, no reaction. Do you think gears internally inside the transmission are toasted & I just can't see them because it's sealed? I appreciate your input.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
turning the spur gear should turn the front and rear driveshafts. does this happen when turning the spur?
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
If your spur gear turn but nothing else does, then you might have broke the 1st gear drive pin in the tranny, pull it out and take it apart, look at the top shaft were the spur gear sits, there is a plastic 2 stage gear there, the pin that drives that gear is probly snaped. just replace it and good to go.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Although its never gone out on me like that, the one way bearing(OWB) is the only trouble I've had with my trans. Does the engine just rev and not move?
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
And of coarse you need to be sure there are no driveshafts turning at all, Mine did that many times it was usualy a broken pin on one of the Axles, you most likely allready checked that all wheels where still turning the driveshafts. Let us know what you find.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
I turned the spur gear with my fingers & it rotates smoothly but, no the driveshafts don't move.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Thanks bud, with my expertise LOL I will take this apart. I have to start learning someday right? :D

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Correct it just sits on it's rear end even after revving it.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Yes, that's what I thought initially but, however I did rotate the wheels & all four move. So, I would assume the driveshafts are ok.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
I did have one axle pin shear and it still had enough contact to drive the wheel until it was placed on the ground and it would slip under load.
But simply enough, if you turn the input to the trans and the output is not turning you know where the trouble is. I know on some of my trucks you need to turn the input many times to notice the output moving with its Ratio. Either way sounds like you are about to get to know your Warhead a little better! Enjoy it! |
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Thanks bud, though I see on the forums that the WH isn't the most beloved MT out there especially for rookies as myself. Oh well, I'm always up for a challenge. I do appreciate the input.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Well, I finally broke down the transmission & this is what I found. Do you guys think I can find these replacements parts in aluminum or some type of metal or am I screwed & have to replace the gears with plastic? The transmission housing itself is in good condition and so are the bearings. One last question. What kind of lubrication do you guys use for the gears? Thanks for helping a rookie out guys. I greatly appreciated it.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Just remember running into rocks, houses, poles, curbs or anything hard damages parts :)
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
LOL, that happend to me in my last qualifier of my clubs COARCS race last summer, its a bummer, but anyhow there are no metal gears that I know of for replacement parts as of yet, your gonna have to stick the plastic back in, as for the grease, I use a white lithium grease on the gears only and I soak the OWB in oil then reassemble everything and good to go.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
to take the tranny out the easiest way that I found is to just remove one of the side plates, usually the exhaust side and that make things way easier.
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Ahh thanks for the tip bud. Never crossed my mind.
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
make sure you aren't missing some teeth on the spur gear. My truck wouldn't move from day 1 right out the box. Turns out whoever put my truck together must have jacked up the gear somehow, and about 15 teeth were completely missing for some reason. Duratrax is sending me a new one by the way, but I had to buy another one just to drive my truck around for the first time.

RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Well, I've orded all the plastic gears from Tower Hobbies for the transmission. I also ordered the Evo upgrade kt for the warhead. I have a question though. The nut that goes in front of the gear spur has a little spring so, how tight do I have to tighten the nut? Do I tighten to the point were the the spring fully compressed?
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
for the stock nut with the spring, tighten all the way then back off 1/8 turn, when you get the EVO upgrade kit it comes with the updated slipper, a much better set up, I would wait for it to put it all back together, with the evo style its tighten the back off 1/4 turn.
|
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
I just put in the up grade kit [very cool] and all went well but it did slip after 1/2 hr. I just tightened it another 1/8 worked good.
The upgrade kit was complete and reasonable, a must for older Warheads. Keester |
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Even though there have been issues with the WH I will say Hobby Services has gone all out with doing whatever they can to fix any issue I have had. I see many are buying the EVO upgrade kit. I just sent Hobby Services an email saying that I had heard they will send the kit for free to original WH owners so long as it is still within the one year from original purchase. I sent them a copy of my reciept and they replied that the upgrade kit was on the way as a customer courtesy for free. Just got it today!
That slipper clutch looks a lot better in design on the upgrade. |
RE: DuraTrax Warhead
Cool, thanks guys for the reponses. I'm still waiting for my upgrade kit & transmission gears. I shall report back once everything is buttoned up. [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
