TNX 5.2R, REVO 3.3 OR MGT 4.60

I want to get started in MT racing. I've just been bashing with my TMaxx 2.5 and now want to get in to the competitive side of the hobby. I can't decide which truck to get though. I've narrowed it down to the TNX 5.2, Revo 3.3, or MGT 4.60. I would appreciate any and all input on this matter. I feel like my mind changes everyday, please help. Thanks.

The majority of monster truck racers use either the Revo 3.3 or LST2.

I don't know much about MGT's but I haven't had one beat me racing yet.

But Revos are a good racer, and the 3.3's are fast. Probably not as fast as the 5.2 but on the track it would be easier to handle and probably easier to race. The Revo's I've tried have a floaty-er feeling to them. They soak up bumps really well. The TNX on the track (I'm talkin 3.0 TNX) on the other hand seems more raw and direct. THey're no slouch either.

Go with what the LHS has

LST2, then REVO, then TNX 5.2

(IMO)

I am leaning towards the TNX, because I feel like everybody and their mama's have the Revo. I'm just not sure about parts for the thing. First thing I would want to change are the shocks and then the pipe. Any suggestions.

Why not go with the Losi LST2 and get a radio you don't need to throw away before you get the the track? A 27MHz radio at the track is a recipe for disaster. The LST2 has a ton of engine options, too, if you decide you don't like the Mach 427. It's a good engine, don't get me wrong, but there are some beasts available in the big-block market, whereas with the Revo, you're stuck with a smaller engine.

RE: TNX 5.2R, REVO 3.3 OR MGT 4.60

Losi lst2's are $650.00 and if you race you'lle need new tires at least and eventually other stuff. I got my TNX 5.2 for only $410.00 in the box brand new and it comes with a .32 ofna engine. The radio and tires will eventually get upgraded but I think a TNX will outhandle a LST2 because I drove an LST2 and wasn't that impressed. The revo 3.3 defanitly handles the best out of all 3 trucks but the revo requires many mods to be very competitive. Tires, wheels, servos, radio, 3.3 engine is okay but you'll want to do everything to lighten it up .Trust me I've already been down that road. Go with the TNX unless you are prepared to shell out some serious cash for an lst2. Oh and MRN8, you can put any engine you want in a revo as long as you get the traxxas big block conversion or the qoncepts conversion.

um isnt the racing limit for monster trucks a .28 size engine, i know everywhere around me its only 28 engines and alot of people i talk to in the US are only allowed 28s. In that case the TNX would require a new engine

Bria1 03-06-2007 08:21 PM

RE: TNX 5.2R, REVO 3.3 OR MGT 4.60

Yep. Which doesn't make much sense since I'm sure many .28 engines make more power than that .32 in the TNX. I guess some club races may allow a .32.

I've kept my mouth shut until now, but I also have 2 say I own all the major monster trucks, LST, savage, revo, mgt, x factor, and so far my TNX pleases me the most. It has the 3.0 small block OS engine. I like the handling better than the revo, its more easy to tune, etc and price is not bad on it. I don't know why it never caught on strong at the hobby shops. the only bad things i could say is expect to mail order your parts and don't expect alot of hop up, aftermarket parts. But trust me before .32 model came out the old version was plenty fast, and handled excellently. The advantage to the revo is every hobby sells parts for them, and bukoo big time after market support. My 2 cents.

My TNX 5.2 just arrived today and its freakin awsome. Makes my revo look tiny. I can't wait to break this thing in.

Now consider this: The Axial .28 is the same engine as the HPI K4.6

The K4.6 is the STOCK engine in Savage SS models, and a Savage weighs less than an MGT...

No they say to drive at half throttle for a few tanks a allow 15 minutes of cooling between tanks.

Would I really have to swap out the stock motor if I wanted to race with the TNX?

The TNX comes with a .32 (5.2), most tracks only allow up to a .28 (4.6) So yes.. unless your track doesn't care, some don't... I'd call and find out 1st and then make your decision... Going with a .28 would mean you should be ok for all races though, wouldn't have to worry about calling ahead of time, to see if it's allowed..

RE: TNX 5.2R, REVO 3.3 OR MGT 4.60

For club racing, it doesn't matter so much which truck you get. If you can easily get parts for all of them, then just get whichever one you think is the most cool! Most clubs don't care what your engine size is. Usually the only ones that are strict about following 'the rules' are ones that run on a track that hosts a couple (or more) big races every year.

Personally, I hope that Hara and Jun run the TNX again this season. It will only help the hobby to have some podium placements with a wider variety of trucks!

what is the name of that big cen 7.7 something like that? than you can just run over the competition. That thing made my MGT look like a 1/10 scale.

Well, I had a hell of a time deciding. Did mad research on this subject, and what I found was that the SMT racing seen in my area seems to be dwindling. Soooo, I went the truggy route, and scooped up a ThunderTiger ST-1 RTR. *:eek:crossing fingers* Wish me luck as I venture out into the rc race world for the first time, and thanks for all the feedback.

Haha All these suggestions and then you buy a truggy instead lol, just thought that was funny. Have some fun and Good Luck with it!
