creating new MT I need input!!
I own a machine shop and will be producing a 1/8 scale monster truck. I am wondering what you guys would want in a monster truck and how much would you be willing to pay. the finnished truck will be all aluminum with steel gears. I dont care much for plastic parts. The prototype is almost done and I will post pics when it is done. Any info would be helpfull, like if you would like it to have independent suspension or a solid axle.

RE: creating new MT I need input!!
IMO an all aluminum truck would be nothing more than a shelf queen. I'd rather break a plastic part than bend an aluminum one. Thing is, the aluminum will bend in minute increments over time (and accidents) which could make it impossible to drive, and almost as hard to diagnose where the problem(s) lie as bends too small to see well will affect performance greatly. Just my opinion though.

What would I like in a 1/8 scale Monster truck?
Durability Inexpensive replacement parts Loads and loads of parts support Light weight - no more than 10-11 lbs 4 wheel drive Reverse - with the option to go forward only Independant suspension w/ big easily adjustable shocks and lots of easy height, toe, camber, etc adjustments. 23mm hexes and compatability with standard MT wheels and tires. Big block engine - .30 or bigger Easy, spacious layout Spread Spektrum radio system - 3 ch. High torque metal gear servo for steering and high speed servo for throttle. Full 1 year warranty on all parts .060 lexan body - preferably painted with "true fire" Ability to easily add a wing & wheelie bar. Some sort of roll bar that truly protects the engine. Maximum of $500 - RTR |
RE: creating new MT I need input!!
u just desrribed a 2000 t-maxx
------------------------------------------------ I would like to see a big block truck, .30 or better, 1/8th, 10-15lbs, Soild axial, adjustable shocks, 4wd, 2speed or better, i think all alum is bad, but if you used plastic in sertin parts of the truck u would have better luck, look at traxxas and savage bulk heads, diff, radio box, i would like to see a roll bar. all alum a-arm's would be grate, chassis, so and so forth, but think about when u brake something?try to use savage tranny or the old maxx tranny's, axial would be good as steel. look at the e-bay trucks, see how they copy other companys, so parts are easy to find. i have to go but i post more later. |

Ya, honestly... Yer wasting your time. Do you remember Unlimited Engineering? And the grossely over priced truck they made, after several generations of maxx conversions? I believe they called it the razorback? Well... It didnt go over soo well. An all aluminum truck is pretty much useless. Useless to a basher, even more useless to a racer. If you still want to go that route, i'd suggest looking into making it a 1/5th scale. You might also have better luck appealing to the crawler crowd... I hope that all didnt come out wrong, or rude. Keep us posted on what you do decide though. As far as cost, just look at whats on the market currently, and go from there. And expect to be price competitive.

RE: creating new MT I need input!!
the price that i was thinking about was around $300-500 range. I fugured that it would be a reasonal price. The one I built I made it for racing against reveos and trucks like that. It has a 2 speed trans and enough ground clearance that it can handle any terrain and still has a low enough cg that it handles good. One of the other reasons I made it was because I had a savage x and it handled like crap so I built a better truck. I raced it with a few of my buddies and they have a revo, tnx, and a t maxx and it out performed all there trucks, So the suggested that I sell these trucks. I will try to get some pics of the original truck I built posted soon

$300-$500 range, for a completely custom built all aluminum MT? How in the world could you ever do that and still make money?
I'm assuming this truck is based on off the shelf diffs and transmission? Out of what truck? You might be better off offering it as an upgrade package for whatever type truck the diffs came from. That's the way it will be viewed anyway if it uses existing drivetrain assemblies. I can build a pan chassis and totally reconfigure a Savage to where the only thing left stock on it is the diff design... but people would still refer to it as a custom Savage. |
RE: creating new MT I need input!!
It doesnt really cost as much as you think to make an all aluminum truck. I was thinking about using savage diffs and tranny. My origonal truck used an xtm mamoth 2 speed and usa 1 diffs

RE: creating new MT I need input!!
A MT made in Nebraska? It would have to be Red right? Let me know when you get your pictures up![:@]
Sounds good!! |
RE: creating new MT I need input!!
best of luck, I would say to start very small and go from there. look at bill gates he sold computers from his house. If you bulid a good truck people will know and you will get a good reputation.

RE: creating new MT I need input!!
Yeah thats the truth about starting out small. A few exotic car manufactures are put together by 12 people or so (maybe a couple robots) They may only sell about 15 cars a year and still make big bucks. Cant think of what the one is called but I know if I was rich I would have one lol.

Now this is what I like to see! All metal is the way of the future :D

You havent finshed that yet? that is going to be on sick 1/5th rock crawler!
keep up the good work![8D] |
RE: creating new MT I need input!!
Thanks ;)
I'm in support of making all-metal trucks, but I can also appreciate the comments on practicality. It is true that the alloy parts are strong, but the weight and lack of flex in some metals doesn't seem to be conducive to a long life. I really think that a combination of some plastic and some metal is the way to go for anything that will compete. For a project or just a challenge, a metal truck is pretty cool. I happen to have a metal fetish, but that's just me  |
RE: creating new MT I need input!!
carbon fiber has a nice look to it and it's strong light weight too.

RE: creating new MT I need input!!
Reiko,
That is purdy, but confusing to me. The suspension and drivetrain looks pretty straight forward but what is the fuel tubing for? Now to stay on topic: I look for flexibility in a platform. I stink on the track, so I try to pride myself on my personal customizations, so a flexible platform is what I am always looking for. Basically something that allows for vast modifications (pan and plate chassis that let you decide where you want to put things). |
RE: creating new MT I need input!!
well, from what I am hearing it sounds like most people want a conversion kit. so I am going to make a solid axle rock crawler conversion for the t maxx and the savage and also a truggie conversion for both trucks. by the way reiko, very nice truck!
