Time for the stock GS26s to come out in place of dual Axial 28RR Spec 1S.

Sounds simple, but the Giga Crusher DFs use a lot of cost cutting so the engines don't have mounts and actually screw right to the motor plates. The engines are also ABN. I walked away from this project before because it is like $300 in Kyosho parts to convert a non GS engine to a pair of regular 21 engines (not including engines). I really studied it last night and I think I can do it for a much, much lower price so I am going for it ($100 total). Along the way I am making some big changes.

Here is a stock Giga Crusher DF. You can see how the exhaust runs down the center and that the tiny little gas tanks sit off to the sides.

I am going to move the exhaust to the outside of the frame rails with a custom exhaust and put 1/8 buggy fuel tanks on the inside for better run times.

Haha! Winter has been terrible here. Wind chill has kept temps very cold when it's not raining or snowing. I don't have enough space indoors to get a decent video. First nice day there will be a video, you will see.

In the meantime I can work on the Giga in the comfort of my home.

Project is going well, everything is ordered. I made some changes to the order. I got .28 Spec 1's instead of the RRs, I got OFNA tanks instead of the Mugen and went with some nice aluminum clutch shoe setups. I will get some pics when it gets going.

Hey Dale, its looking great so far... Are those pipes originally boat pipes, or just some wierd Kyosho innovation? I really like the look of the small black cans on the ends of the stingers, are they removable from the pipe? Keep the project going Dale, SavageJim started a twin Axial .28RR Savage a few months ago but he has dissapeared from the forums[&o] Good luck, Tom.

Edit: I took a closer look at the cans and saw a screw poking out;)

I think they were like boat pipes. I have mock fit up the exhaust and it is KILLER. Runs on the outside of the frame rails with big fat 1/8 buggy tanks in the middle. Since I went with cheap Axial 28s, the whole project is <$300, engines and all.

It is going to be a sweet truck. One of a kind.

You are right about that, but those Axial 28s were $99.99/ea!!! Can't beat that price. I will post updates. Thanks for the interest.

I am up to my ears in Mach engines... :-)

Actually, I have read from multiple sources that the Spec 1 28 is the HPI K4.6 engine- interchangeable down the the piston/sleeve. I really like the HPI 4.6. Plus, the Giga Crusher is hard to get parts for. I want to make it fast but I don't want to shred the drivetrain every run.

First step- get GS-26's outta there. I have to remember to thank Kyosho for the .02 cents they saved for casting the mounts into the engines instead of having a standard .21 mount. Thanks Kyosho. Really.

Here is an MGT engine mount that I will reverse engineer onto the Giga. Not a good fit like this.

Mount goes on a lot better backwards. Bingo! Plus it keeps the stock holes untouched, so I can always put the stockers back on.

Only problem with the brace is the angle support won't clear the engine backplates. Probably important for an MGT, but since this truck has the cool integrated roll cage, the cooling head won't take a direct hit. So, off goes the angle supports.

After; Positions the engine perfectly for a good mesh.

The next step is to remove some material from the MGT engine mount so the engine shafts sit at the same height. You can see that the GS-26 is lower by about .242". I will remove .12" from the top of the MGT mount and .12" from the bottom of the mount.

Another update...

Today went EXTREMELY well. After I played with the MGT a bit, it adapter very well onto the chassis. I got the engine bolted down with the perfect amount of adjustability to get the clutchbell/spur mesh right. The mesh is perfect.

The Mach 26 you see is just a mock up engine. Just a placeholder for the Axials. So far the upgrade is 100% reversible! I am happy with that.

Here is pic one of the engine mounted and screwed to the giga chassis. Plenty of clearance from the front driveshaft and outdrive.

Pic of the alignment and gear mesh. I am confident that the mount will not be able to readjust and wipe out the plastic spurs. This went better then expected. Hopefully the mount holds up being reverse mounted and weakened from the material I took off. I suspect it will hold up ok. There is still a lot more material then your typical 1/8 buggy mount.

This is where I got really excited. My exhaust idea was PERFECT from what I pictured in my head. I bought the stuff without knowing if it would work or not. I used a Savage header to clear the rollcage assembly and then an XTM manifold/pipe from a Monster MT to route right down the side of the chassis. It turned out exactly how I hoped it would. I will get some nice matching silicone couplers when the truck gets finally built. Also, I am going to brace where the two headers meet. Picture one of those fire breathers on each side of the truck!

Nice, that extra tubing should boost torque. Good thing you got the three speed, the long tube header might limit the RPM it has.

air filter is stock on giga crushers. It came with the truck. it is effective. There is a filter at the base of the hood scoop that filters the air to both engines.

Engines, starters, clutches, headers and gas tanks are all in! All I need is one more MT pipe and I am ready to complete it! 5B SS came in though... Not sure if I will finish this or get going on the 5B...

Looks great man. That's one of those trucks I always wanted but never got around to it. Your exhaust idea is unique. All the modded ones I saw used proboat marine exhausts.

Next step is definitely a 'no turning back' step for the new engines. You have to hack the crankshaft to accommodate the Giga's clutchbell shaft. This is not for the squeamish. Small children should leave the room. Of course that is a bit dramatic. I could always buy 2 new crankshafts and they are as good as new.

I had another great finding here. Based on the way I am routing the exhaust, it is the PERFECT clearance for the tiger drives!!! I was worried about this, but yet another puzzle piece falls into place.

I did have a setback... Savage clutchbells and clutch will not work with this. I am going to run the stock Giga clutches for now (look like MIP clutches). Once I toast those, I will figure out what to do.

Here's the final mockup shots before a total tear down and rebuild. I did ruin one of the MGT engine mounts, so I had to get one more to redo. Now the truck gets torn down and rebuilt. I haven't run the truck since I bought it last year and the shocks are leaking, diffs are leaking and the thing is dirty and sticky. You won't see pics for a while... Project isn't complete but there is a lot of dirty work to do. I put on RC Raven Maxx springs and Team VTX exhaust couplers. I really like the monochromatic look. It's all black, grey and white besides the cooling heads.

I never run engines before pulling them apart, inspecting and resealing them also.
