Help me get started the right way.
First off I am new to the whole nitro side of things. I have built and raced electric cars for the last few years but have recently moved and there is no local track and being in a rural area now there isn't a lot of decent pavement to drive my cars on. So I sold 2 of my cars (keeping one for visits back home) and am ready to buy a nitro truck. I am asking for you guys help because there is so many choices out there that I want to make the right decision. I want a relatively fast yet durable truck. I don't want to have to replace the engine every 5 tanks of fuel. Parts availability is a must because I will be building a track with jumps on my land. Being newly married and recently purchasing a new home money is tight. Not tight as in barely making the bills but tight as in wanting to continue our way of life and saving the same amount for the future. So after selling 2 of my electric cars and putting a little bit more in I have right at $400 to spend on a truck, accessories, and fuel. So please if anyone can spare the time please share some of your knowledge with me and help me make the best decision and now waste my money.

Average price on the savage?
Honestly after doing a bit of research last night I am leaning towards the MGT. I like that 4 screws remove the electronics and It seems that parts are readily available and even in bulk on ebay. Upgrades are there and from what I have read it seems like the MGT is a pretty stout truck. I only read a few post where someone broke something and when people were having problems a quick call to AE usually solved it for them. For those who say get the MGT please list what you like and dislike about it. For those who say get the savage please list what you like and dislike about it. Same goes for any other models too. |

About the mgt, I love the size of it, Its extremely durable, fairly fast. I like how you can use a drill to start the engine or use the pull start.Another good main point is the amount of open room there is on the chassis. It allows easy access to everything. The stock 4.6 has plenty of point the front wheels towards the sky. As for what I don't like, I don't like the stock pull start as the recoil mechanism broke on me pretty quick, but thats ok because I find the drill start a lot easier than sitting there yanking the cord. I don't like the center clip that holds the rear half of the body down, it allows the body to become unclipped in the back easily. It is a simple fix though, just flip the body mount over and you get the two post body mount. Theres not much else I don't like about the MGT. What ever you choose im sure you will be happy with it.

I spent all last night reading through the 300+ page MGT thread here and Spent some time on the AE forums and the MGT forums. I am 99% sure I will get the 4.6 MGT. So while I wait on the ok from the wife help me with a few questions I have. I want to order everything all at once so here they go.
1. I read that the turn buckles are weak and should be replaced asap. What should I replace them with? 2. I want to go with a FOC. Where do I order it from and is there anything else I need to install it? 3. How strong are the shock towers and the stock A arms? 4. Best wing kit? 5. Best roll bar kit? 6. Best fuel line to buy? (remember I am an electric guy) 7. What fuel do you recommend for break in and for general bashing?\ 8. How strong are the stock wheels? I doubt I will jump it higher than 4 or 5 feet. If an extra set of wheels is recommended which ones and what tires? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for all the help so far. |

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. They are in my opinion the two best bashers around. I have a Savage 4.6 and LOVE IT!! What I think should be the deciding facto for you is to go to your Local Hobby Store and see which one of the trucks has the most parts at the hobby shop. I have a Savage and my buddy has a MGT. We both love our trucks, and would definitely consider each truck if we were to buy another truck. But like I said, I would go to your hobby shop and see which truck they support more. The LSH by my house mostly supports HPI so I went with them.
You have to remember that these are not no hard core racers and wont be very competitive at the track without modifications. But both with take a huge beating and keep on going. |

Ok so I have made up my mind. There is a hobby shop within 30 miles of here who stocks parts for the mgt. I will be buying the mgt in a week or so. I am going to start my list tonight on things to order with it.
What do I need to get it running besides the MGT of corse Fuel Glow plug igniter 1600 mah pack Charger for pack after run oil Air filter oil fail safe diff shims shock caps extra fuel line FOC kit Any spare parts or extra stuff I should keep around? IE screw kit, spare filter, ca glue for tires, How long will a qt of fuel last? I have no idea how much to buy at once. A qt? gallon? 4 gallons? I will add links to the list in just a bit. I am browsing for stufff now. If you see anything I missed please feel free to let me know. |

A quart wont last long...it all depends on how often you use your truck. A gallon lasts about 24 tanks or so. A tank will last you 6-10 mins. I would also get some lock-tite and use it on all the drive cup screws as they tend to fall out. You should really use it on all screws that have metal to metal contact. Ca glue always comes in handy for anything. Keep an eye on the wheel nuts after each run or just lock-tite them in place. Other than that you should be all set for a while.

if your going to put the fok in the trans you will cure the weakest part of the truck if you plan to do a lot of jumps keep a couple spare control arms around as far as fuel i use 20% blue thunder definitely buy by the gallon if i run allot i can use a gallon in a week it is a little hard on fuel i added a second fuel tank to extend run time i did not like the stock tires at all poor grip and roll over very easy over all i love the truck and associated stands behind it fairly well as far as the fuel line the stock line if fine i still use it never had any issues with shock towers or turnbuckles i have broken a couple control arms in bad wrecks you will like it i do recommend going thru the entire truck and making sure all screws and set bolts are tight before you run it i found several loose i hope this helps

Ok buy the truck from Ultimate Hobbies Free shipping I believe. Buy all the Accesories from Tower. In all honestly just starting out I don't think you need ALL of the upgrades you listed , save your money and spend it on fuel! You really don't need the 2in1 Mip clutch, the stock one is perfectly fine. The multi charger isn't necessary. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFVD4&P=7 This will work for the receiver pack as the glow igniter already comes with a charger. Do your self a favor and pick up the fuel locally. Buy a gallon of it. Tower makes you buy either in quarts which is more expensive or at 4 gallons. Save your money for a good peak charger such as the dynamite ultra or GreatPlanes Triton or Duratrax ICE, they will pay for them selves later on if you decide to pursue the hobby further.

One word of advice, or sentence to be exact.
Stay Away from that Glow Iginter, its a peice of Rubbish, Ive had 3 from Tower, all crapped out on me after a few starts. All times they have been replaced, but Its the same problem, first the meter will stop working, and eventually the iginter itself. Id rather you go with a better one, its not even worth getting the tower one. |
