The Ultimate Pit Basher?

The pit I bash in has a hard packed fairly loose, relatively smooth surface with no big rocks. It has some monster hills and jumps, so the car will need to be rugged with reasonably good handling, traction, jump well and be capable of taking some hard landings.

Your suggestions please

Snaut, what's the new tmaxx like? Is it much of an improvement over the old 2.5?

I'm certainly no fanatic, but why not? Because they're gearing towards "noobs"? They have pretty solid stuff, minus a few...

The losi lst2 will definitely fit your needs.:D

Will an lst2 fly like a revo? And are there any durability issues?

Evader ---> MGT 11-23-2008 01:16 PM

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

All trucks have their issues... A-arms being a universal one, expect to buy RPM a-arms if you're going big!

As far as flying, a REVO will go faarrther because it has less mass, but the LST is a beast. Size or nimbleness and flight, that is the question.

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

would you say the LST is a better handling truck than the revo?

Savage 4.6 or XL.

Losi and Traxxas trucks are not sufficiently durable in stock form. The Savage isn't perfect but will require less modification to be a good moderate basher.

the savage xl looks like a beast, but ive hear the engine is not great, 3rd gear is weak and there are also problems with the a arms

Yeah, the 7" shocks on the Savage NEVER bend!

HPI_Savage_RC 11-23-2008 10:41 PM

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

They rarely bend if properly set up. On the other hand I have seen LST2 shock shafts snapped in half and Revo pushrods bent from far less abuse than is required to even tweak the Savage shafts.

I'd say the LST2 has the best stock drivetrain, but the chassis and suspension are weak. The Revo is a race truck that requires a lot of RPM and Lunsford parts to bash decently. The Savage 4.6 or XL will suit you the best if you plan to bash on monster hills and jumps.

Says who? The Savage owner that has probably never even touched the controls of a Revo?

After owning my Revo for 4 years and bashing it hard, I've not felt the need to add "a lot of RPM and Lunsford parts to bash decently."

Good luck if you land that Savage upside down... hope the motor doesn't get shoved down through the mounts... like my friend's did.

Revo and LST2 have gotten my votes... Savage never even came to mind when I looked for another basher... [X(]

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

I call BS. Post some pictures of this amazing stock Revo that can handle "4 years of hard bashing".

And yes, if you land a stock Savage on the engine, you might break the mount or plate. Both parts are less than $10 each to replace. Do the same to a Revo, and you'll be replacing the bent chassis. Same with the LST2. None of these trucks can consistently survive a hard inverted landing in stock form. Show me an example of a custom nylon or delrin rollcage that someone has built for a Revo or LST. Oh that's right, you can't. The only people who have pursued effective engine protection are the Savage owners, because they are the real bashers.

In the end, if you want to hit monster jumps, you are best off with the Savage. Yes it will need a few upgrades, but just upgrade as you break stuff, which won't be very often. Despite what the biased Revo and LST owners will tell you, the Savage is the king of heavy bashing. From here on, I consider anyone who thinks that a stock Revo will outbash a Savage 4.6 to be a complete idiot. The LST is closer to the Savage, but still a fair distance back due to its brittle suspension components and poorly designed chassis.

Ummm... OK...

Engine shots that show I've landed on it a few times...

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1...vo/Revo004.jpg

Sadly, yes... after 4 YEARS of hard bashing... it has come time to replace my bent chassis... (eBay, $20 = $5/year... that's acceptable), those darn motor tabs weren't braced enough on the older ones... so, I got a Slayer chassis with the brace so that it'll last a LOT longer without bending.

Who cares about being able to add a nylon or delrin rollcage? (BTW - if it's produced for sale... it's not custom, it's aftermarket... a custom would be a one-off... and that definitely could be designed for a Revo... if anyone found it necessary) That just means the Savage isn't strong enough on it's own.... has to have some help.... of course, if it's a roll cage you're after, there's plenty out there. They're just not plastic.

HPI_Savage_RC 11-24-2008 12:29 AM

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

No, the Savage is plenty strong enough, the engine crankcases aren't though, which has nothing to do with the truck. I personally snapped my stock S-25's case in half 4 years ago, whether that engine had been in a Revo or an LST or a Savage it would have broke under abuse.

When did I tell you that the custom Savages cages were for sale? There are dozens of designs out there, and only one that is currently being sold.

Anyway, this is what a REAL basher looks like. Notice how there isn't a scratch on the head, because the cage (Which was built entirely using parts that came with the truck) protects it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...IMG_1786-1.jpg

And here is the body after multiple 20ft+ landings on the rear of the truck.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...Picture316.jpg

I was also the first person to bend a Vertigo 6061-T6 tank guard... The engine didn't have a scratch on it, and that was before I even braced the cage that COMES WITH THE TRUCK.

The SAVAGE is the clear bashing winner. You won't be disappointed with it. If you buy a Revo thinking it will hold up to monster jumps as well as RR claims it will, you will be highly disappointed. End of story.

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

I'm not saying the REVO's the best basher at all, but uh, what chassis do you have on there? That can't be stock, so did the stock one break??? :D

HPI_Savage_RC 11-24-2008 12:53 AM

RE: The Ultimate Pit Basher?

The stock TVPs were slightly tweaked after a huge jump off of a 6ft tall ramp that was placed on the edge of a very tall dirt hill. The ground below was concrete. You do the math. It would have been a lot worse had I not been running aluminum bulkhead plate/TVP braces (A $5 upgrade that every Savage owner should do). I also bent and cracked the FLM TVPs shown in the bottom picture.

The current chassis is made by Innovative-RC. 4mm thick 6082-T6 aluminum. Extremely strong, there is no way I will be able to bend it.
