Which MT
I'm looking for a good basher for around $400. The ones that have caught my eye are the Savage x 4.6 and the MGT 4.6 but there are some concerns that I have about both of them. The concern that I have of the Savage is that I have heard that it strips differentials really easily, is this true for the x or just the older models and is there a cheap solution? I have also heard that the MGT goes through transmissions pretty quickly but can be fixed by doing a forward only conversion, can anyone confirm this?
One last question I have is are these trucks easy to tune and do they hold a tune well? I used to have a tmaxx 2.5 and i would always have to be constantly adjusting it to keep it from overheating. I want a truck that I can tune up in the morning and not have to worry about it the rest of the day. I'd also like to hear any suggestions of other good bashers in my price range. |
RE: Which MT
Both are good trucks.MGT diffs dont last any longer than the Savage diffs. You have two choices here. You can install Nemesis diffs in the savage and have a tank,or you can run the MGT with an FOC(forward only conversion).I personally would go for the Savage with Nemesis diffs.A Savage with Nemesis diffs is bullet proof:D:D

RE: Which MT
First of all, their is NO nitro out there that you can tune once in the morning and then proceed to run all day without having to adjust for changes in temp., humidity, and barometric pressure. Sorry, that's never gonna happen, and if that annoys you then you need to stay away from nitros all together.
I have an MGT 8.0 and I love it!!! I've heard the 4.6's do have tranny issues, but as you said, this can be remedied by putting an FOC in it. You can also find an 8.0 tranny new on ebay(between $50-100) and install that. Those trannies are real tough since EVERYTHING internal is steel. I've had no problems with my diffs either, but people do say you should shim them. I'm just being lazy about it.:D Only things I'm breaking on my MGT are the body mounts. Otherwise, it's bulletproof!;) |
RE: Which MT
What you heard about the Savage stripping diffs is true for the pre X models, most of which came with 2 bevel gears and plastic diff cups. The X series has come a long way and they are bulletproof unless you run high horsepower modified engines- thats when the weaknesses will show. Both are great trucks out of the box, the Savage has long held the title as king of durability though Losis/AEs trucks are up there as well. You will not experience such headaches with regards to tuning as compared to the T-maxx, it was the same story for me. My T-maxx was a nightmare with the stock engine, they are probably one of the worst tuning engines in RTR trucks. Your expectations of not having to tune at all are somewhat unreasonable, but you can expect to make adjustments sparingly as you drive. I've gone through a week using them 2-4 times without touching the needles for 2-3 tanks at a time- its not impossible but specifically depends on the engine. The HPI F4.6 engine is one of the most reliable out there, and has power to boot. Both are great trucks in the end- each truck has their problems, so as long as its a name brand and its not Duratrash- pick what you think looks better.

RE: Which MT
I have both trucks, except older models than the ones you are asking about.
I have a Savage .25, and a .21 MGT. The savage differentials are fine as long as you dont go to a .28/.30 LRP or Picco. Just keep an eye on them and shim them when they get loose and they will last a long time. I have about 4 gallons on my savage differentials and not a hiccup. I also run an Axial .28 in it. I havent broken anything at all on it yet. Its really an awesome truck. It jumps great and is extremely durable. Seems to be lighter than the MGT, and makes a little better use of the power since it doesent have reverse. I like the design of the chassis better since it seems a little more ridgid, and it really is the most durable MT i have had. It is a little tougher to work on, but i dont really mind it. Its a blast to drive. I havent had my MGT as long, and i have no idea how many gallons are on the truck all together. I am running the .25 out of my savage in it, and it has been great so far. There are several things that make it more user friendly than the savage. You can change the spur gear without removing anything. The savage require pulling the top of the transmission housing off(if its an X) and a Pre-X requires removing the engine. You can also change the clutch bell without removing the engine. On any savage you will have to remove the engine. The MGT also handles better, and brakes better. It has a flat chassis layout which makes it easier to work on. The transmission is fine if you keep the drive cup wear to a minimum. Slack in the driveline kills the transmissions from what i have heard. No problems with mine so far. This truck has also been durable for me. No problems yet, and it is a lot of fun to drive. Id have to say if i were choosing new, I would take the 4.6 savage. I just really like the savage, but just pick the truck you like best and go with it. I wouldnt want to give up either one of mine[8D] Eric |
RE: Which MT
I 2nd cummins. Pick the one that has the best support in your area. Pick the one most of your buddies have most likely they will support you with parts, repairs and mods. Or just pick one to different. Like Chevy and Ford they are both very capable and reliable MT’s. If it were me I would Get either the XL or the 8.0 version. "IMO" Sell the both version engines on ebay and get either an LRP or Picco. The MGT 8.0 has the better radio digital 3 channel 10 vehicle memory and comes with reverse leave it or FOC. The Savage has a better steering servo.
