need help with sealing
 

i bought an almost brand new mini mgt 3.0 the truck is flawless and the engine is in perfect contion. i took it all apart and the inside is clean but the problem im having is its leaking from the seal/backplate. how do i go about sealing this sucker what does everyone use.

I go to advance Auto and get gasket maker, comes in a tube and can be used for all your r/c vehicles.

Ultra copper or black Permatex RTV.

I know Auto Zone and Advance Auto carry them. Don't know if hardware stores carries them, you can check and see.

thanks guys i went to advanced auto and picked a tube of it up. i got 3 engines im gonna seal rs4 evo+, mini mgt and monday im gonna seal my new savage 4.6 when it comes.

i have a question. when im sealing the engines cause ive already completed them do i seal the exhaust or leave the exhaust gasket. cause what i did was seal the exhaust also.

If you sealed the exhaust thats ok. Most are held by a spring and will eventually losen itself. You can remove the head and seal it too, and remove the carb and seal it also. All these methods do help with compression. Some HPI carbs become loose, so people will seal them.

well this is what i did. I sealed everything but the head. i also blue locktited everything the head will not come loose. the engine in my rs4 3 evo+ 3.0 is 2 months old and its only been through 1 gallon but when i just did the sealing and i put the glow plug back in to test compression i have some SERIOUSLY strong compression compared to before. its a big difference.

Thanks for all the help guys its much appreciated. ive also noticed that the same thing with the mini mgt 3.0 engine its got some crazy compression now. hopefully i wont run into any leaks. One other ? when i get my savage 4.6 monday wich will be brand new should i take the engine out and seal it?

none of my exhausts are held on by any springs they are all screwed on.

It won't hurt to seal the new 4.6, keeps leaks from popping up in the future.
Do it just like in the link I posted, a little goes a long way...
Most of the RTV squishes out anyways and will cause problems.
I use a toothpick to dab on a light film.
I personally don't put RTV on the head, that's what shims are for.

I don't use RTV on the exhaust.
Gasket has been enough for me and if it's damaged it needs a new one.
From what I read all your engines are side exh?
This pic is of a stock AE header and one that I modified to match the port on the O.S. engines and the gasket that comes with the AE header.

Cept for the Plaxxas which is rear exh but still uses screws...
I'm curious, which engines have a round exh port and which have a long rectangular exh port?

the traxxas uses the round, the rs4 evo and mgt uses the longer port. the bottom one shown in your pic. and yes they are side mount exhaust

Any side mount exh engine like what I pic'd should be port matched.

You are correct, if the exhaust comes with it's own gaskey, it is better to use it. The head only needs seal if the rings are missing, some people dab a little around the outside of the ring, but that is just a choice, I've done this on my savage and seems to work pretty good. As far as his savage, I would recommend sealing the new engine, mine leaked two years ago when I purchased it. Here is a picture of my savage. And a picture of my Traxxas Jeep that I also sealed.

yeah i took off the exhaust and put a new gasket on.
