With a new istall, you have to avoid the need to over tighten. The screw only needs to be snugly seated on the flat of the shaft as the locktites job is to keep the screw locked in at the "unstripped thread torque" Also a good tip is to use an "L" hex wrench but only hold and tighten the set screw useing the short end so you can't over torque it. Don't put the short end in the set screw and use the wrenches leverage. Turn the wrench around so you can only use your gripping fingers to tighten it.

How old is your Bike, I Cracked my 13t pinion and they sent me a new one. Then that one cracked, so they are sending me a new one again. DId yours strip or is it cracked and the crack is opening up when you tighten the ss. Mine shattered, both of them identiclal, the whole corner broke off. Call them and see if they will send you a new one. I have a 16t on it now, it was all I had. Man is that thing fast now.
Come on Micro who has the 24 hour patience, REALLY, not me I cant ever wait that long!!! My wheelie bar bent the crap out of my rear frame, has anyone tried the carbon fiber chassis yet. It kind of pricey, I wish they would just sell the rear section in CF.

No cracks in mine....the problem I'm having is the the pinion is moving up and down
on the motor shaft..it does not turn or slip on the motor shaft.

Guido,
Those riders don't work on the DX450. Because of the leaning shape of those riders they don't fit.
The only riders that I know of that are plug and play is the HPI ATV rider and the rider from the Sparc RM250 Suzuki.
I have a few of each should you need one.

Are they solid body or a shell like the DX450 rider? Plastic or rubber? Do they hold up much better then the stock rider?
I have a buddy that got the DX450 with me, would you have two to sell and how much each? I'll have to do a search and see what they both look like.
Thanks,
Guidoco

They are a very durable hollow vinyl type plastic highly detailed, similar to the TT riders. They are the Ricky bike riders in green (paintable)
$30 shipped each. What needs to be done to mount. A larger hole in the hands will slip onto the bars and a hole drilled in the inside boot for the pegs, done.

Are you set up with Paypal? If you send me a PM with your paypal email address I can send the money that way tonight when I get home from work.
ADDED: I emailed my friend and he just emailed me back and said he found 2 for $16.99 with the ATV body. I really appreciate the offer and hope I can do a favor for you sometime.
Thanks again,

Anyone have a solution for the pinion sliding up and down on motor shaft? I'm thinking about
taking a dremmel and put a trough in the shaft so it doesn't move up and down.

Hi MICRODAN, thanks for all your tips and knowledge.
I'd been with my DX 450 the last four months and honestly THE BEST EVER, after 11 years in RC. I ordered from Tower all the gold aluminum upgrades from Duratrax, everything looks awesome in the DX, i had a problem with the front suspension(one of the main shafts have a small o'ring to hold the press of the oil but it doesnt hold it). Do you know what i have to do in order to have a warranty on it? Do i have to return the whole system or just the damaged small o'ring, cause i have already assembly the other one. THANKS, again for all ur experience. (for a next upgrade do you sell parts or have a store?, i want to order with you if possible)
P.D. PLEASE i need one hpi rider, email me the Paypal instructions. Thanks.([email protected])

I think you might be talking about the "G" ring in the front shocks. They are horrible, I ended up useing small "E" clips. I found a small e clip that I had to force a little to get into the shaft body. It worked and is locked in there. But if you were talking about just an o ring, call DT and see what they say.
I'll email you on the rider...

It seems oil in the rear tire is common. Why? I don't know. It could be there so they can slip the tire on the wheel easier.
The oil didn't seem to come from the inside of the wheel as the guts were dry on mine. I found the oil in mine when I also took it apart to remove the weights.
Cleaning the inside of the tire with solvent like acetone, alcohol, etc and the wheel should allow the two to grip enough to avoid slippage.
If anyone can figure out why the oil is there let us know. So you are not alone with this oil mystery.

Here are a couple of pics of my homemade wheelie bar /fender saver.
I have since changed it by drilling holes straight thru the existing holes and used axle collars to hold it in.
Commercial versions are available from 2wheelhobbies.com

RE: DuraTrax 1/5 DX450 Brushless On/Off-Road Motorcycle
Hi, I'm new to the motocycle business with my brand new DX450. After reading the all 16 pages I still have 3 questions:
1) I'm installing my Spektrum DSM2 radio and I'd like a new steering servo. I want a digital one with ball bearing and metalic gear. Before I search everywhere on internet may be you have an idea ?
2) I'm riding on gravel and also on a mix rock+dirt. As I have to ride through bumpy rocks I don't think I shall ride without any weight in my gyro. Will I have any interest in riding the lightweight gyro with weight ?
3) this one is SOOOOtheorical: Shall I ride a 3s LIPO with a motor -let say a 3800kv- or a 2S battery with a 5800kv motor ?
You see what I mean ? It should be round about the same RPM with the different engine(aka same speed) , but with 3S=more volts=less amps for the same wattage= less loss like in a high voltage power line, no ? But the 3s battery with have less mAh capacity for the same size as the 2s, but again, with higher voltage the total amount of energy store should be the same ? What do you think- efficiency, endurance, heat ? And caution, not all ESC are 3S friendly, many Novak don't !
Also I will look for sensored motor for low speed progressivity
Sunny evening, I'm going to ride !

2) Gravel and mixed rock is best with the stock gyro, you can experiment with removing some weight. But the rougher the terrain the more gyro you need.
3) The stock motor and ESC will handle 3s. But for your rough running I would stay with 2s 3800kv. The 2s 5800kv will run hotter. or you will have to use a smaller pinion to compensate.
What you mentioned about the different motors and 2s vs 3s would be better for smooth dirt or asphalt.
The way this bikes runs and the speed involved a sensored motor would be wasted, not needed nor is there any advantage.
Castle Creations Mamba 4600kv on 2 or 3s with the Mamba Max ESC is a nice combo.
I run the CC 5700kv with Mamba Max ESC on road and have come close to 50mph with the stock pinion. You need a torque motor for your gravel, a 3800kv or 4600kv maximum is what I'd say.
I hope some of this info was helpful to you, again this is only my opinion and experience.

RE: DuraTrax 1/5 DX450 Brushless On/Off-Road Motorcycle
Thanks Microdan for your experience sharing. You're absolutly right, no need to look for increase power when riding rough off-road. I've made the experience with my Traxxas Slash 1/16 running 3S big 540 size motor: too heavy, too powerfull, no fun and in fact no handling at all !
I'm starting to ride the bike. It's fun but it's another way of thinking than the car. Oh my god where's the reverse !!!! Always need a little speed, tight turns make mesweat !
Right now I'm fitting the Duratrax steering dumper -as they say, in line with the control bar and with oil- to try to get rid of the streering bobing-due in part to my driving, let's face it !
Microdan (and all the DX450 lovers !) did you exchange the front hub side, putting the wheel in front of the fork ?
After a sunny evening, now a sunny day ! Let's ride!

Yes the hub is spun around to make the axle leading instead of trailing. This also gives you more compressed suspension as the wheel will not hit the frame with the increased clearance.
