Slide carb problem
Hey people,
New to your forum & need some help. Just put an OS .12 with a slide carb (came with the engine) in a 10GT. Set the the carb opening to about 1mm or so. Plopped it on the starterbox & fired it up. Thing started screamin like a banshee!! Carb still only sitting @ idle![X(] Shut it down & checked everything. Seems to be good. Fired it up again. Rear tires lookin like a dragster doin a burnout!! Before I could shut it down the clutch & spur gear came flying off![:o] Need some help here to figure out what I've done wrong. My other cars have rotory carbs that I have no problems with. Any clues or suggestions would be greatly appreciated:D Thanx! |
RE: Slide carb problem
When you were runnin it did you have an air filter on it. It still shouldnt be reving like that though. I noticed when i took my air filter off the idle went clear up.

RE: Slide carb problem
Make sure you have some sort of throttle return spring still and have the linkage correct
@ 1mm gap, there is no reason it should do that |
RE: Slide carb problem
The filter was off but I dont see how that would make that much of a difference. I'll put it back on & try it. Also the spring is on there. I did give it gas while it was running to see if if that was a problem but obviously that did not help. When it's not running the throttle moves back & forth as it should no problem. I will ck. the linkage again but I'm pretty sure it is correct. It's 12:30 am here so I will not ck. it out till the morning. Thankx for the suggestions. Will let you know.

RE: Slide carb problem
Just an unsolicited comment,,,
Why would you change to a slide carb? Most, well just about all, the guys I race with recomend a rotory carb,,they have much smother bottom end response than the slide does, Slide carb engines are much more suited for 4wd applications, onroad cars etc.,, Anyway good luck |
RE: Slide carb problem
Like I had said earlier it came with the engine and truck was already set up for it so I figured might as well use it as both were brand new. Plus I dont have an extra rotory carb sitting around and as carbs go they are'nt cheap. So, I ck'd.everything and it seems to be set up right. Everythings tight so I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. Any other ideas??

RE: Slide carb problem
The air filter would make a difference. It would allow alot more air into your engine making it to lean. It is the same as a timey crack in the carb. It sents the car flying.

RE: Slide carb problem
If you have your filter oiled correctly is shouldn't impead any air flow
loosing an airfilter will not make the engine go lean to the point it revs up uncontrolably, that's nonsence |
RE: Slide carb problem
It would seem if I had a big enough leak somewhere it would be noticeable. I adjusted the linkage some more to see if that would help because the spring seemed to be compressed more than it should. No help. I'm at a loss. Don't want to start it to many more times as it is a new engine & I dont want it to grenade on me Like the spur gear & clutch did. Still looking for parts on the garage floor!![X(] Anymore ideas before I break down & fork out more money for a rotory carb? Also is a pain to switch to rotory? I.E. Throttle linage & so forth? Appreciate all your help;)

RE: Slide carb problem
Make sure your carb is on tightly and you have gaskets where there are supposed to be. After starting it up, put your finger on the carb and see if the engine shuts down. If it doesn't then u probably have an air leak in the carb.
