Well, you could get an FM radio. This will help increase distance over an AM radio.
Or, if you are willing to blow enough doe, you could get a PCM radio. I don't think this is something you will want to spend big bucks on just for range though.

PCM Radios

PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation. It digitizes the signal as binary code to provide an extremely accurate signal. PCM radios are considered high end units and start around $250 and can easily hit $1500 for the top of the line models. PCM radios are more common among professional racers or those who fly planes. For the hobbyist, an FM radio would probably be the better choice when weighing reliability and cost.

I just read a long article on the spectrum raido system. I cant find the stupid magizine at the moment but pretty much you take your controler and plug this special intenna where the cristal is sopposed to go and you get this thing that looks like a reciever that goes on your car. You can then drive the car much farther than you could ever see it. and from what the article said the people testing the system couldent get the thing to glitch. Oh and you NEVER have to worry about being on someones frequency. How it works,,, I have no idea but it was $$$$ and for some dumb reason now I want one bad.!.!

Chances are you won't be comfortable driving it further away than the stock range allows. Even the low-end AM radios that come with RTR vehicles have pretty good range.
When you get it, do a range check. Get a friend to stay with the car, and you start walking away. See how far you get before you lose control. (Don't do this with the car running, just leave the engine off and have your friend watch the wheels and throttle servo)

You'll probably be impressed.

I drive mine as far away as I dare on the big car-parks and its fine. I do massive full-throttle runs in a huge oval. It'll do 100 meters easy, thats about as far as I've had it away... I really wouldn't bother about range - where were you planning on driving it anyway? Like what has already been said, you will be limited by sight and confidence, not range.
