xxxnt diff problems
 

ok... i thought i stripped a gear or something a couple of weeks ago. i tore the whole thing down and split the diff cases excpecting to find something broke...everything looked great. i inspected everything and put it all back together, followed the manual on how to adjust the diff and thought it was ready to rock.

so heres the problem...i fire it up and drive it around slow for a couple of minutes to build heat in the motor. then when i start to get on it it goes good for a while, then the diff loosens up and it wont move.

the first couple of times it happened i thought that i just didnt have it tight enough in the first place. id take it in and tighten the diff WAY up...the more i tighten it, just gives me more time until it loosens again.

how far should i tighten it before i need to worry about breaking something? the last time i couldnt even hold the allen wrench in the slot...i thought that would have done it but no!!!

PLEASE HELP!!! IM GOING THROUGH NITRO WITHDRAWLS!!!!

Did you take the diff apart to check the inside where the balls are? It could be a couple things. Your clutch could be bad, slipper pads are bad or something with the slipper clutch, or the plastic gears in the tranny need replaces. I dont know which one it is because i am not there with your car. I would need to see your car in person to know. I would probably replace all the plastic gears in the tranny including the diff gear not the balls though but first take a look at the slipper clutch.

the slipper, clutch, the inside of the diff, and everything looked great. if there was a problem with any of the gears, it wouldnt move when i tighten the diff.

when i TIGHTEN the diff, it works great for a while then the diff loosens for some reason....just a bunch of b.s. to me:eek:

Is the xxx-nt diff held together with a nylon nut? It sounds like it is worn out. Replace it. Maybe use some loctite in there (sparingly) to hold it better.

...checking further back in the directions...:( yes there is a nylock nut that needs some massaging[:-]

you might have put the diff screw on the wrong side of the truck;)

When you rip apart the diff, you might want to put in an aluminum diff; it'll last much longer.

An aluminum diff gear isn't going to solve anything. The only difference one would make is that it will not melt, that doesn't mean you can have a slipping diff and keep running though. It might last slightly longer, but you will then just be destroying balls and rings.

Sounds like diff is in backwards...check the side with the adjustment.
It should be on the right

From my expierence with the metal diff it is only good if you buy the other gear in metal with it too otherwise you will just keep screwing up that gear. Like said before you would than have to replace the balls instead. Whatever works for you.

yea adjuster was always on the right.

i couldnt get the nut out of the piece that holds it in the diff.(have to get one at the LHS) so i put it back together and tightened it ALOT by hand, put it back in. it lasted for not even a tank of gas.

in the mean time i noticed that when the diff is tightened properly, you can just barely see the threads comming though the piece mentioned above on the left side. so i mixxed up some 2part epoxy and put a very small dab right on the threads. well see how it is on monday*shrugs*:D

well the screw pulled through the epoxy[:@]

then i snapped the screw trying to tighten it up too much...off to the store i go!
