menace prob, revvs high and wont move
 

Hi guys, i was out with my menace and after driving it for a bit it stalled, when i tried to start it i noticed the guard over the gears bumping up when ever the engine turned over. The problem was the clutch shoe had morphed and was sticking out between the flywheel and pinion(i think its called) and the spring was nowhere to be seen. Why would this happen?

Then i got a spare part and fitted it, now the engine it revving very high and the will move slightly then stop and wont move even if i have it on full throttle. Any help appreciated, i bought it RTR and dont know much about it or nitros.

Hey seems like the clutch spring broke, if you put a new clutch in that should fix the problem, a lot of times with menaces' you have to make sure the idle is not set to high. If it is this can cause unnesscary heat in the transmission and can lead to stripped spur gears. Also the menace is known to burn up clutches because of the extreme amount of torque the truck has, depending on how much you have driven it a new clutch is just normal maintance. You might want to make sure you put the clutch on properly or this can lead to your truck not wanting to idle.

ok, i replaced the clutch and theres no change, its revving high and not moving, but if it helps the enigne is turning the gears but the car just isnt moving. Any ideas?

Hmm well you might want to check the belt drive, if the belt is broke or torn the truck won't move, make sure your idle is not set to high and the batteries in your truck and radio are fully charged.

ok, ive checked all those and there ok. the wheels spin a little when i take the car off the ground but stop when i increase throttle But i think ive found the problem but i dont know whats causing it: the pinion bell is moving away or outwards and therefore disengaging 1st gear so only 2nd and 3rd gear are spinning, i just cant figure out why.

the steering yoke seems fine and do you mean the drive shaft, because its belt and the belt is ok. its just not engaging first gear, 2nd and 3rd are spinning though. its driving me nuts

I called the modelshop where i got it from on friday but the guy there couldnt figure it out and he said call back on monday when the other guys were in, ill give schumacher a call tomorrow morning and see if they can help

Sounds like the clutch bell needs to be tightened down. When you replaced the clutch you could have put the bearings on wrong, look at your manual, take the cultch bell off and put it back on by the way the book tells you, see if that helps.

thats what i thought but accourding to the manual the bell just rests loosly on the shaft and the clutch shoes, is this how it should be?

Ahh Brent, your a genious. The ball raced bearing that holds down the pinion bell had broken, the outer ring and the ball bearings are missing so the bell wasnt being held down. I just didnt notice it before. Ive ordered a spare part now so fingers crossed it should work :D

I love it, ive had it 3 weeks now and the speed is awsome. Its my first nitro and it took a while for me to get used to the speed but now i love it

wow 4 cars, thats quite a collection. Most of my money is going into buying alloy parts for the menace lol. I was just wondering though how come theres no official Menace 21 thread on this forum?

I also had a bit of trouble tuning mine with a different fuel, i had it tuned well with the 16% fuel that came with the car, but ive now changed to model technics big bang 20% and i keep in leaning it and the performance continues to get better then all of a sudden it will stall because its too lean! So ive got it somewhere in between and it seems to run well. What fuel do you use?

I use traxxas top fuel it seems to let the engine run a little cooler but i still get temps around 260 but the car runs great.

I never check the temps of the engine, is really necessary? if its over heating then it'll cut out right? and what % is the fuel, is it the new 33%?

Well i would, but yes lean means it cuts out, i run 20% top fuel. 33% would just make the truck accelerate faster.

hmm ok thanks for the advise, ill invest in a temp gun. Also id love to see the menace on 33%, it would become a rocket!

Oh yes.. not like it isn't a rocket now lol but i am sure 33% would be awesome, if i keep the truck long enough i might try running 33% on its next engine, they say it isn't good to switch fuels or different percents of nitro if you used something different to break it in.
