Diff. Question
So what do I need to know about the differential. The last car I have touched was a pan car with a motor gear and a spur gear on the axel, thats it.
So what should I need to know about the differential, what is the different oil/grease for. And why would I want to change it. Thank you ahead of time for giving me an answer |
RE: Diff. Question
use associated diff grease on a ball diff, if its a gear diff just use moly grease or anything really, you cant change a gear diff on a stadium truck except the jato.
If its a ball diff you would use the above grease when rebuilding it and you want the diff as loose as you can get it without it unloading during acceleration. simple really. |
RE: Diff. Question
Depends on the diff. The reason to change the diff fluid in a gear diff is to change how easily it will 'diff out'--or unload all the power to the wheel that will spin. A heavier viscosity will make it act more like a posi rear end.
On a ball diff, the adjustment is in the tension of the spring holding the friction disks to the diff balls. It only needs to be appropriately greased when built...To change the action of the diff, tighten or loosen the thrust bearing screw. |
