Nitro Rustler with 2 speed transmission

1 Attachment(s)
I have seen a few people ask if a Nitro Rustler could have a 2 speed transmission put in it and many people have responded that is was not possible. Well I took that as a challenge and YES it can be done. I purchased a Jato 2 speed tranny from ebay for $34 and I now have an extremely fast Rustler. The final drive ratio is higher yet is has a first gear so you still have the low end torque. In case anyone else was interested in how to do it I made a video detailing the install and mods required.

The video is posted on you tube in a part 1 and part 2 because it is 12 minutes long. I could not cut 2 minutes out without leaving out needed info.

Please check these out and give me some feedback.

Thanks

Great mod and a clean install it looks like. thats the kind of thing I like to see and that used to rule this Hobby. instead now everyone bragging about their truck being the best and depending on someone else to make it better for them. (manufacturer) Good job mbell [:-]

Thanks. It was a lot of fun trying to do something different. Especially something that does not seam to have been done many times before. I took alot of extra time trying to document the required modifications. Did you find the videos helpfull?

I have an HPI RUSH. I do not like the fact that it is a single speed. I will have to check out the videos possibly do this to my Rush as well. I will keep in touch for sure

Just laid out the bolt pattern mating the holes in the bottom of the transmission. then drilled and countersunk them. Hardest (not real hard) part was aligning the plate before drilling the holes thru the Rustler frame. The transmission needs to be as straight as possible and centered. Tools utilized - drill, hack saw and measuring device. The plate is just a piece of 2" x 1/8" flat piece of aluminum I purchased at Home Depot for 5 bucks. Way more aluminum than you need to build aal the pieces required.

Awesome job! I asked the question because the trucks are to close not to be able to make the proper mods to pull it off. Though I was given advice other wise I was going to try it anyway. I like a challenge to but more than that I would like to see people's faces when they think trhey've but I catch 2nd and burn them. I might not be the first but the mod will happen anyway. Pioneers rock.

haha i like the fact that you only used a vise and hacksaw with a bench grinder to do this. Very nice work for what tools you used.

That is all anyone needs to do custom work on RC vehicles, unless they like everything to look perfect.
