I'd like to start painting my own bodies and I'm wondering what would be the best type of equipment to get. I already have a compressor so all I would need is the airbrush.

I have a Badger 200. It is not too bad but not too good. It cost around $50.

How much are you willing to spend? That will put you in a ballpark to choose.

I didn't want to spend much because it is my first airbrush. Now that I've used it for while now I'm thinking of going up to about $100 and see what I can get.

The Badger 200 doesn't do very small lines with the water based paints but does a nice job with lacquers.

the problem with water based paints is that it becomes messy if you don't regulate the air pressure

try an IWATTA ...there no brush better ,,prices start @ $85

OtterBall: can you explain what you mean a little more with the water based paints. i myself am getting onto airbrushing, and i have this problem with the paints i am useing. they are "exploding" when i try to do a fine line. i am using FasKolor water based paints.

Badger 360.. about 140 bucks with mixing cans.... No more changing needles... you can pick up a good compressor from Lowes for about 80 bucks w/ regulator... under 250 for a great setup! and the compressor has enough umph to blow off the cars on a race day.... check it out...

I have an IWATA too they are great airbrushes
I can do a hairline with water based paints and the brush I use can also handle thicker and heavier paints
Its called the IWATA Eclipse BCS Its a bottem feed airbrush
Its my first but its great and will not need to be replaced when your skill improves lots people on line use this brush

I bought a Paasche VL and noticed that it comes with different needles.
Can someone tell me what these needles do different from each other?

I Just bought the same airbrush. i love it.
the 3 needles are for differant size sprays...
example:
the needles that is in it is a number 2 needle, and tip. that is for medium lines, and coverage.
there is a needle number one in the box, this is for ULTRA fine lines, and small area coverage.
the other needle is a number 5, this is for heavy lines, and large area coverage.

by needle i mean the needle and the tip that is also provided. you need to change the tips when you change the needles.

also i noticed in another post you asked the difference between the VL and the VLS... the VLS has a screw in paint jar, unlike the VL that just pushes in.

Personally i like the push in better then the screw in, but its just personal preference.

Thanks for the info Speeddemon. I mainly want to use the airbrush for those extra fine pinstripe jobs ans I also like the airbrushed headlight look.
