How to paint something like this?
Does anyone know how you would achieve this type of color scheme? Im thinking some type of blue coat for the body, and transparent blue backed with chrome for the flames, but somehow, i dont think this was how proline painted this body...

actually yea, now i can see what you mean about the lighting. Still, you think there might be a way in which you could get a color like that wihtout special lighting . Ive tried transparent blue backed with chrome, but it doesnt look as nice as this...

i guess u could do it. just get a nice blue or a dark blue. then get some sort of blue that has a faded look to it and get the flame color. thats just what i think.

Those are called Ghost Flames because if they're done right you can't really see em at certain angles. Those are really popular in the custom car world and heres how I'd paint it.
Mask off everything but the flames and lightly spray the body so you can still see through it,the darker you go,the more the flames will stand out.
Then you just remove the mask and back it with your main color so that fills in the rest and half the flames you didn't spray with the lighter color.

Here's how I'D do it:
Mask off everything but the flames.
Use Faschange blue "lightly", then back the flames with white.
Do the rest of the body with a darker blue "heavier" coats.
Back the whole thing with a white.

dont know if you want any more suggestions but i would personally mask off the flames, paint the rest of the body first, and then add some pearl powder and a few drops of white or black to the same color (depending if you want darker or lighter flames) and then paint the flames. that would be a good way to get TRUE ghost flames if that is what you are looking for. you would only be able to see the flames at certain angles where the light would reflect off of the pearl and a very slight hue difference. hope that helps. good luck and post pics when your are done.

if I were you I would Mask the Flames. Use Whatever color you want to do the body and paint it with a few light coats. Then remove the Mask and paint the body with the same color. Paint the flames as dark as you like then back he entire thing with Chrome / mirror backing.
Good Luck

The Faschange/Fasflip colors are great, and you can get some really nice "ghosting". I'm going to do some of that on an upcoming body.
Reverse mask the flames (basically mask everything else.) Apply a very light coat of Faschange/Fasflip, (Very light otherwise it'll be too opaque and won't have the desired effect.) After that's dried thoroughly remove your masking and spray the whole body. When the light hits the flames they'll reflect a different color. The Faschange purple works well with the blue.
For masking, you've got a lot of options: vinyl, tape, liquid mask. I prefer cut vinyl, then filled in with liquid mask.

I agree with tiki's comments. That's how I acheived my ghost flames, but you have to remember, the ghost flames will need a color in the back that is similar to the flames itself, otherwise they stand out brightly.

Hey Tiki, when you said use Pearl Powder and paint with the orignial paint, with either white or black paint to make it darker or lighter, did you mean paint it first with the pearl powder mixed with Faskoat, and then paint with the color either lightened or darkened, or paint it with the desired color along with the Pearl powder? Thanks.

paint everything but the flames in the color you choose. then take that same paint and add dry pearl AND the white or black, and then paint the flames. and go easy when adding the white or black so as not to change the color too drasticly. so to clarify, add the pearl and the white or black at the same time and then paint the flames. hope this all is more clear. let me know if you need more clarification. good luck and post pics when you finish

RE: How to paint something like this?
Hey Tiki, I was thinking about how I would go about painting something like this, and I came across another question. I prefer using Pactra paints much more than Fascolor, but I will need to use Fascolor to paint the pearl part, so will this work if I paint the body first with Pactra paint, and then use Fascolor for the flames? I dislike using Fascolor for complicated jobs cause it doesnt adhere to the lexan as well, and peels alot when removing masking. I know i will need Fascolor though for painting the Ghost flames, cause it needs the Pearl with it. Also, how much Pearl powder should I add to the paint when doing the flames?? Thanks a lot.

you shouldnt have to use faskolor at all. you should be able to just use the faskolor pearl powders and put them in the pactra paint. i dont think they will react with the laquer. so then you wont have to use faskolor paints at all, just the powder.

RE: How to paint something like this?
The only thing I am afraid of is that by adding the white or black, either the change wont be drastic enough, so the flames will just blend in to the rest of the body at all times, or you will always be able to see the flames. Guess there is nothing to do but to try it? Anyway else have any success / failure stories? Post pics!

if you only add pearl then yes the flames will disappear when the light isnt reflecting off of the pearl. thats why i said you should change the tint of the paint very slightly to aid in the visiblility so you can see them more often.
