Default Need help about surface primers

Reading the Tamiya manual for a car with a polystyrene body, they recommend to use a surface primer as a base coat. I have never painted polystyrene bodies and my questions are

1) What benefits are there with a surface primer.
2) Which surface primer should I use? There are white, gray etc.
3) After I have sprayed the body with a color, and I want to paint details such as lights, should I first paint it with a surface primer? Or maybe flat white color?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a picture of the body? You can melt polystyrene with paint that has to much solvent in it. probably the reason for the primer.

I actually do not have the car yet. It is a Tamiya Pajero Metal Top Wide or something like that. I am planning in advance
I am going to use Tamiya's own TS colors.
