Default Dying Chrome Rims??..

I have to dye a white dish rim later - but just one... I have a new set of Savage rims - silver.. Was wondering if I could just dump them in the dye and get a black chrome effect?? Thanks..

Am having second thoughts.. Would prefer some cheap yellow dish rims I think..

But, would sure like to see some pics myself - if anybody has some chrome rims they've dyed black....

Maybe if somebody asked in the Savage forum, the chances of seeing some dyed Savage rims would be better...

Edit : oh, nevermind..

Looks good.. So should I just leave them in for an hour or what?? They're HPI, not RPM rims...

Been more than an hour now - they're turning slightly goldish, but not black.. Mayge not warm enough - so cranked it up a notch... We'll see..

Well, four hours later, I can now tell you that dying HPI chrome rims black DOES NOT WORK..

Now I just need some kind of heavy duty paint I guess to salvage them.. Otherwise they're useles.... They're just kind of uneven brownish....

Soak them in paint thinner and every now and then scrub them with a toothbrush. The chrome will come off without affecting the plastic. Then you can dye them whatever color you want. My buddy byte has done this a few times with great results.

A container just a little wider and deeper than one wheel and do them one at a time.

Cautionary notes from RPM: We have tested this dye process on RPM chrome wheels only. If you decide to attempt to dye any other manufacturer's wheels (chrome or natural), you do so at your own risk. Some other manufacturer's wheels can possibly melt when subjected to the high temperatures of boiling water. Although we have had a 100% success rate when dying our wheels without any negative effects, RPM cannot be held responsible for any negative effects you may encounter.

They're still soaking..(quotation marks, apparently, being insufficient to convey that..)

Anyway................... Point? If you want to de-chrome your HPI rims, you'll need something stronger than paint thinner.. And this stuff I have is strong too - or at least smells it - it stinks up the whole room every time I open the can.

when you're trying to dye them, do you have the water hot? It needs to be close to boiling point for a good 15-30 minutes.

I'm not dying them - I'm trying to get the chrome off BEFORE I can dye them.

sorry, I thought you were still trying to dye the rims. As for removing the chrome some people swear by [link=http://www.starshipmodeler.com/tech/mp_cola.htm]using Coke[/link] (soaking) overnight. Apparently Windex also works well. Never tried either myself. Let us know if you try either of them and they work. Ive got some savage rims too.
