Ultra Rc Evolution
#404
Sometimes it is easier to be following than leading. Thanks to all of the notes above, I took my old Evolution down, from last year, and pulled off the lower covering.
It was pretty easy to fit some vertical sheet webbing to the main spar in all of the bays. For the center/root bays I cut slots in the existing sheeting and slid the sheeting in that way. To re-cover I peeled back some of the red and slid the new white covering under it by about 3/8" so that the overlap would be in the right direction to keep out any fuel.
My own personal mod was to extend the wing-tube spar design to reach the servo bay. Now the wing is pretty stiff along its whole span and bends uniformly when loaded through the wing tube.
Regards,
Eric.

Hello all :
I have just spent the last two evenings adding strength to my Evolution wings. I followed Troy Newmans advise after studying the plans of several other older pattern planes Namely the Typhoon 2000 and that series planes that were popular back years ago .The wing structure used in the Typhoon built up wing is almost the same as the Evolution with only small differences in design. The shear web is vertical grain 1\16 balsa between each rib just like I added to the Evolution only now I have cross grain 1/8 shear webs. I would think that it would be as strong. The wing is much stiffer now than before. The work was easy to do anyone could do it. As for the comments about inserting the indoard webs blind through the sheeting that is not the case , you can see in the root end very well and also see in from the middle with the covering off making is easy to get the placement correct. I have no guarantee that this will work, I hope it does the plane flies really well . I hope that Ultra and others will keep bringing us good entry Level planes all this needs is a little tweaking .
Thanks Kirk

Hay Eric : A while back you talked about cutting off the legs some for a glow version. Did you remove it from the top or bottom of the tube ? I ask because I cut the top off and pealed the white back and sanded the thread that it is wraped with down until it was a good fit in the socket and went from there . I have had a failure on the left side on take off , it broke right at the fuse where it goes in.
I notice that the tube is slightly smaller after sanding that the original without sanding . Maby this caused the break at 25 flights with normal landings so far. Removing the metal axle and cutting the other end would be just as easy then glue with some black CA? What are your ideas
Thanks Kirk

Kirk,
I have shortened several of the U/C legs on Ultra RC planes with no ill effects. If you do nothing then almost all of the legs will snap there.
The first thing that I now do is to strengthen them with a carbon rod insert.
Please check out the Katana thread below. [My Giles's, Katana and Evolutions all have this mod. Those that I sold were sadly sometimes crashed and notably the gear never snapped!
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_48..._2/key_/tm.htm
Check out post number 37. It has all the details on how to get stronger legs with no external modifications.
Secondly, The way I clean the crap off the out side of the leg is to use a K&S brass tube and an electric drill. In fact I use two K&S tubes. One to clean the outside and one to clean the inside of the CF leg. Just choose sizes that exactly fit. One that slides over the leg with no slop is the one that you want. K&S have two sizes that do the job just fine. I took my "leg" to the hobby shop to help me choose the right ones. I clean the inside to get rid of any unwanted glue to give a good fit for the carbon rod insert.
Another tip, that I would add to the mix, is to use chopped fiber glass mixed in with the slow cure epoxy that holds the outer sleeves into the fuselage. The chopped fibers speed up the cure time so I would not use anythng less than 2-hr epoxy.
Finally another modification is to remove the short wire axles. A heat gun and pliers does that job. Then replace the short axles inserts with full length piano-wire replacements inside the original carbon legs. The piano-wire should end just below the retaining bolt. This would be a faction heavier, but probably well worth the peace of mind.

Thanks Eric : Do you know what size the leg tube is ? I have been unable to contact Ultra RC over the last three days by phone or E-Mail for a replacement . Can you give me the size of the tube as well as the size wire so I can make my own. I also see on Ultra RC web site the replacement legs for the G 202, are they the same ? They dont list any replacement parts for the Evolution ,I am glow so they dont have to be super long.
Thanks for all the help

I have ordered carbon tubes from [link=http://www.acp-composites.com/acp-tube.htm]Aerospace Composite Products[/link] that I beleive will work. When I have it installed I'll post a picture.
As to your question "Do you know what size the leg tube is ?" By leg tube I assume you mean what I'm calling the strut that goes inside the socket. It is 0.312 OD. I don't know for sure about the ID but a central pushrod will fit inside it. I'll have to meaure it to see which one it is.
If you broke the strut and need a replacement the closest thing I've located is 0.312ODX0.236ID and for an insertable rod for extra strength I measured 0.230ODX0.144ID. So if your stock socket in the fuse is OK this will fit.
The socket that comes with the plane is 0.390ODX0.315ID and I've had no luck in finding anything this size. The closest I could find is 0.393ODX0.290ID.
I am replacing the entire set so I can make the socket longer below the fuse. l'll be installing socket size 0.393OD X 0.290ID. After drilling out the original socket my hole is slightly enlarged so the new socket being 0.003 larger is no problem. For the strut I'm gonna use 0.285ODX0.186ID which actually fits quite nicely in the socket. And for a carbon insert I'll use 0.180OD X0.110ID tube.
Sorry I don't have it together yet, so I can't post a picture. When I get it finished I'll post pics.

Thanks Eddie . Are you shure the metal axle will fit inside the with an ID of .236 ? That sounds bigger than the stock ID is . It is a real shame that Ultra RC wont support this product it really does fly very well . I have several contest just sround the corner that it looks like I will miss because I cant get new struts. I know that they were trying to keep the price down but they went to far with things like this landing gear setup and no service.
Thanks Kirk

Kirk,
If you have a local hobby shop, you could try taking the strut to the store and find the correct size carbon rod, and this is what I did.
Meanwhile, hate to see you miss out the contest due to no spare struts. PM me, I should be able to help.
Regards,
Kevin

In regards to your comments, if you are referring to the fact we are currently sold-out of the replacement Evolution landing gear, than I am sorry. We did offer you the replacement Giles landing gear legs which are a little over 2" shorter in length than the original Evolution legs. They will fit and work in the stock landing gear sleeves, however the bolt hole in the top of the leg is not drilled in the correct location to fit the Evolution sleeve. Many have used the Giles gear and simply redrilled the landing gear leg in the correct location. If you are interested in this set-up, email or call us and we will take care of it for you.
Sincerely,
Ultra-RC

I didn't have any problem fitting the metal axle in the strut. In fact I purposely left some material attached to the axle, when I ground it out of the broken strut, to get an approximate fit. The hole in the strut is larger than the axle. A little J-B weld and it glued back in.
Jim
I'm glad to know the Giles gear is the same size in diameteras the Evolution. A little shorter is not a problem. I am wanting to extend the shuck(socket) so I am using all new material, since I'm gonna have to glue it all in place. If I could find socket material that would fit the stock gear (Evolution or Giles) or if you could acquire some socket material in longer lenghts ,I'd use the stock material.

Look back on post 303 I think. There are pics there of what I did for my friend with the bolly "electric" gear for the glow version.
I'm sure you did already look at the pics. Also post 294 shows pretty good the spot where they go through the outside of the fuse.
I have another fuse here that's a spare that I could open up the covering and take pics if you want.

Hay Chris If you want to I will take any help I can get. I have a set of Bolly F3A swept back gear , Did you put them in the same place as the stock tubes go or can they be put in the open area just in front of that aginst the stock assembly for support and did you put them on top of the pipe tunnel or down into it some I not shure the legs will be long enough on top.
I have wasted two weeks fooling with Ultra -RC trying to get the stock gear. They told me they shipped in Monday this week that was false as the UPS guy has not come to my door . I will not do any more buissness with them. I am in a service business and would not have a customer one if I treated them like this . Oh well lessons learned.
Thanks Kirk
