Default *Best Deal on 120-160 Size ARF Pattern Plane*

What is the best bang for the $$ on a good 120 - 160 size ARF pattern plane??? Pattern planes or a little more $$ than your average 120/160 size Aerobatic plane but they fly so nice. Years ago I flew the Super Kaos, Tipo, Tarus, and a host of others and they all flew so much better than the other planes I had. I'm just getting a little tired of the Extra's, Cap's, YAK 54's, etc. I haven't had a good pattern planes since the late 80's to early 90's

I'm not looking for vintage pattern ARFs. I want something new but looking for the best prices for a plane in the 120-160 size.

If I had to pick based on 'bang for the buck' and wanted to stay with something in the 120 size, I would buy a Venus II with an OS 120AX. Not quite as big as the 2 meter planes but it flies very nicely, simple like a Kaos and you can pick up the Venus II for about $250 (even less on special). The OS 120AX is more than enough power, in fact add a head shim and use 15% nitro and it is a real *****cat with unlimited vertical.

Above that size it all depends on how much you want to spend. UltraRC Evolution, Piedmont Focus II are probably next on the price list, both good flying planes (140+ size), then you get into the AeroSlave Symphony, Composite ARF Integral, CA Models Genesis choices then into the ultra nice stuff like the Oxai models.

Plenty of choices but I am still amazed at how well the Venus II flies for $250.......

Thanks for the info Woodman. Nice looking planes. Not to sure if I like the landing gear on the Ultra RC 2 Meter plane but a nice size for a good price.

Ditto Venus II... assembled perfectly stock with an OS 120 4-stroke, extremely well-mannered, unlimited verticals that just tractor on up and up and up. No-rght-hand KE without any mixing. Needs a tiny bit of rudder mix on uplines and a bit of down elevator mix for idle throttle downlines.

This model flies so well that I suggested to GP a Venus III, with 2-meter, 2-piece wing and airfoiled tail group and pipe tunnel.

For a competitive plane, I'd have to go with the Focus II from Piedmont. Very well put together. Those guys accept nothing but the best in their quality control. I know Dave wont ship a plane unless it meets his standards. Very well built and flies just as well.

Take a look at the Spot On 120 - for the price I don't think you can beat it. There is a build thread going on here with Riot3D - unfortunately he is a really slow builder.

I don't quarrel with the above recommendations. I was and am a major fan of the Venus 40, and have to believe the Venus II can be made to fly as well as its little sister. However, the Venus II's I've seen have been so far not impressive, maybe because of their pilots. One with a 120AX seemed to be powered well, but did not perform especially well in the wind. Another with OS 120 4-stroke seemed lacking in power, therefore lacking in maneuvers. The flyers were people I didn't know well enough to barge in and offer advice to, so I kept my nose out.

Piedmont, Focus, Epsilon 120 all good recommendations, but expensive compared to the H9 Showtime. Showtime has no pattern pedigree, but if you're looking for a very reasonable price and capability of winning Intermediate with no problem, Showtime value is hard to beat. I coached a buddy with Showtime/120AX this weekend, just starting to wring out his new plane, new engine. Knife edge with no mixing, steady on both pitch and roll for the length of the field with no right-hand input. Did his first ever axial slow roll, and told me it was the plane that did it, not him. Did the lower class maneuvers with ease and grace. Did a few snaps very creditably, stopped on target no problem. All this without the SFG's, mainly at half-throttle.

I have a YS120 which is unemployed at the moment, and have decided to put it to work in a Showtime. I will probably strip it and re-cover, as I do with most ARFs, and dress it in pattern colors. No one will ever know.

What engine would you recommend for the Epsilon 120? I was thinking OS 1.60fx but a friend mentioned it would be too heavy. He was thinking the OS 120 AX and to keep the fuel tank. I was going to put tank over center of gravity and pump the engine.

I am building a Epsilon 120 with an OS 160, I will be putting the tank over the cg and running a perry pump. I think the the 160 will be plenty of power.

I have built and flown the Sword 140. Downside is one piece wing but it flew fantastic. Won its first contest in 4 rounds and performed well.

It is available through Texas RC i believe.

Do you know what your weight was for the Epsilon 120 after build?
