I did in the Abbra two-three years ago. Weight was very close to 11 lb. You will need to be careful with weight. The Abbra with YS 160 is a little below 10 lb. I help a friend to put it together. I flew the plane two or three times. In my opinion, it will be OK for low classes but for Master the power could be a problem.

Check this picture,

I am. Go back in the RCU archives and retrieve the thread I started on the soft mount I built for the engine. A soft mount for the composite fuselages we fly is a must. My model's weight is projected at 10# 10ozs

Matt,

You are correct. The Abbra was retrofited with a soft mount later because it was almos destroyed by flutter. My friend was lucky to land in one piece. After installing the soft mount the change in sound and vibration was just incredible. In conclusion, not even try without a soft mount in a pattern plane.

Do you have links to the old information? I know that we wrote a lot about this subject before.

Vince, when you say that for Masters power could be a problem, what do you mean? Not enough power or too much?

My latest design in which the engine will go, is large by current standard...around 1150 sq in, full 2 meter by 2 meter. Large, draggy fuse too. Mine will be piped

I also have a 27% Xtra I probably should outfit to break the engine in. The plane is a dog on a Moki180 but with the extra power who knows? At least I think it's more power......it turns more prop than the Moki at decent, usefull rpms

Matt,

Correct, I have flown the same plane (Abbra) electric, glow 2C, glow 4C and gas. The gas engine was behind (when we had the vertical square 8) compared with the others. When you finish yours let us know your experience.

No, it was the non F3A version. I don't remember the prop size. I know that it was 3 blade when I flew the plane during the triming process. I put together this Abbra for a friend two years ago so I don't remember the details. I am sure that he used a prop recomended in the manual. I do remember that the 3 blade was used to control noise and get ground clearance. He flew Sportsman in a couple of contest with no problem.

I have the 40RE F3A and am using the large ES carbon pipe intended for the larger 2 strokes. Don't be too alarned..the pipe weighs about 3 ozs. I don't have the setup optimised but that won't take long. I have run a 20x10 woodie and will run a 20x12 sometime later in Sept. That's for break in. Eventually I will run a 22x12 on it (own design and don't know performance yet).

I have the ZDZ 40 F3A
I got about 7050 rpm on a ZDZ 20x12 prop. (This is the prop ZDZ recommends for F3A)
ES Composites pipe (40cc) The pipe weighs 114 grams (4 oz.)

Not sure if you can compare the power of the old version to the F3A version.
I unfortunately damaged the plane early on, and have not flown it much.
I made my own "Hyde mount", which significantly reduced the noise. (Originally installed with "wellnuts".
Own design model (Composite fuselage, foam wings)
Total weight 4850 grams.

Regards,
Magne

Matt and Magne,

Let us know as soon as you have a chance to do the whole rutine. I am interested to comment the Master schedule or FAI-F3A P schedule.

Magne and I discussed my soft mount postings last year. Magne proceeded to build a soft mount that was similar. Then he installed it in his model....Magne's set-up in the model was at a more advanced point than mine since his included the nose ring. Magne, please post the photos of the nose ring arrangement you showed me last year. Others will benefit from that simple and effective set-up

Matt
