Default spark ignition on a pattern model

FWIW about 10 years ago- we equipped a ST2300 with a tuned exhaust and a spark ignition

the result was a very smooth setup running an 18x8 APC turning 9000 on 5% nitro- easy staring (no dying in mid air) no engine fussy mods
! CHEAP!

The YS setup looks nice - bu t maybe not for everyone My entire setup was a few hundred bucks - very light and easy to use. Anyone interested in this type setup Contact C&H ignitions - they now have a very similar setup and it is not expensive.

Wonder how that would work on a OS-160,.performance wise, anyone tried it yet?

Dick,

Did you find fuel economy gains similar to BillC when he tested the YS170?

Hi guys I did this convertion 4 weeks ago for YS 110s.(run it on glow fuel)
Engine runs very smoothly from low to hi throtle I can get reliable idle at 1400rpm.
Fuel use was down about by ~30%/
Same kind of power with 25% fuel.
& around 800rpm down with 5% fuel but still very reviable & smooth idle.

No I did not and frankly I don't buy some of the stuf I have seen claimed such as you can run it dead lean without getting hot etc..
Voodoo aerodynamics are bad enough but Voodoo engine performance really sticks in my throat. Running the spark setp -controls when ignition occurs -so a slightly leaner mix can be used but not a LOT leaner mix.
You can run less nitro and get very good performance
Why?
because high nitro blends reduce sensitivity to heat in the engines. essentially ,artificially makes needle setting less critical
If we switch to gasoline -the reason "why" is obvious .
the amount of FUEL to AIR per cycle is increased as nitro is added
this means the mix can be far more broad if we use more nitro
Also- reducing oil content is a really bad idea .
this old saw raises it head every few years a good safe mix is 20%synthetic - 5% nitro (just to smooth things) and the remainder GOOD dry alky.
The compression can be tinkered with - increase it till the needle gets cranky or temp control gets difficult
a stock OS 160/ST2300 is OK for most setups As you increase the prop load reduce the compression . The tune pipe use - should be pretty large and long -(on the four strokers just use a big can - Tuning a four stroke pipe is not a very productive venture .
there -you have all the speed secrets no Voodoonow try it and make adjustments one at a time
