RE: F3A OPEN INTERNATIONAL, BOGOTA 2008
Yesterday turned out well. After staying up all night and getting my passport from the airport, I arrived here in Bogota just after noon. There were a handful of guys there to get me, and a couple of other pilots, and we packed our things and headed out to the field. Everyone put their planes together and just as the rain stopped, the flying started. Last flight at dark and then here to the hotel and out to dinner. That´s when we found out that we were getting up at 6am to leave for the field in the morning... . It´d be worth it right, we´re flying pattern.
Just in from the 2nd day of practice, but instead of this one starting after 30 some hours of no sleep, this just started at 6am... OUCH! There were 8 of us were out there practicing in the light winds until just afternoon when the rest of the Ecuadorians arrived and hurried to put their planes together. Total for the day was 15 pilots out there practicing. Only 1 mishap happened and it was because the pilot wasn´t ready for the lack of air up here and his plane stalled and hit the grass... Unfortunately the whole front end and a wing were destroyed, but he´s still flying using a borrowed plane. Normally this isn´t allowed in an FAI competition, but we´re here to make sure everyone has fun first, so this rule is not being enforced. I´ll try and get some pics posted after dinner if I don´t pass out first. Great people, flying facilities and flying. Weather is pretty much holding out with the occasional shower. Jeans and a jacket are required, at least for me.

RE: F3A OPEN INTERNATIONAL, BOGOTA 2008
Today is the day that we all start to have fun... I mean get serious. After another great day of practice for everyone yesterday (only issue was a throttle servo that came loose and the pilot had to fly around at idle for 20 minutes) we had our processing, pilots meeting and an amazing dinner gathering. After a few more hours of sleep, we are gathering down stairs now for our 6am departure to the field. Eduardo from Ecuador is on the computer next to me typing away updates to back home and then off to meet everyone in the lobby. If you miss the bus here, you miss the day of flying! Tonight we have decided that tonight we will have an early dinner and come back to the hotel for a full nights rest. I will post a bunch of pictures then. In the meantime, there is such great excitement for the event and it´s future that there are already discussions for the next event. Even mention of holding it in Muncie in 2010 (going to be a biannual event).

The scores will be posted at the end of each day online. The scoring here is fastest Ive ever seen. With-in 5 minutes of landing, my printed scores were in my hands. I dont have the direct link to the scoring but Im sure someone with a faster connection can find them and post the link. We re hoping that the rain stays clear of the field. So far its been nice weather with a light breeze, but I think the wind is about to start to get stronger.

Awesome!
It looks like you guys are having a lot of fun! Thanks for the updates everyone. If I get good enough one day, I'd love to fly in something like this.

a few pics before I go pack. More when I get home.
Taking off into the overcast-rain
Top 3
Final scores
This contest was great. The people, the flying and for the most part the weather (considering it´s the rainy season). Sorry Muncie didn´t pass for 2010, but Venezuela has the contest now. From what I heard, it´s just a bit better than Muncie...lol.

RE: F3A OPEN INTERNATIONAL, BOGOTA 2008
This was a memorable event, we finally were able to get together on a contest, some had better luck than others, but at the end I think everybody was happy.
When you have an event where people like Jason Shullman and Marcelo Colombo attend, you will definitely learn something, they are two great guys, talked with everybody and answered all sort of questions, my flying will improve dramatically now that Marcelo asked my to fly his airplane, after that I realized my setup was not correct (ok, it was junk) to fly in windy conditions and led to over-corrections, Jason and Marcelo said the same about this, set up is everything.
We usually think we know about all this, but, it is when you have this opportunities that you realize how much you learned and can improve, gracias Marcelo.
Besides the F3A stuff, we all had a great time, at least we were laughing 30% of the time every day, it was a great gathering.
The judging was good, Carlos Forero (FAI Judge) was taking comments from pilots and working things out to improve the judging, as it is probably the most difficult volunteers to find.
The guys at the Aeroclub 2600(yes it means 2600mts above sea level), did an impressive job, they took care of all of us, from the moment they picked us at the airport to the moment they dropped us in the airport again, to them MUCHAS GRACIAAAAASS.
For an event thought to have only 8 people in the beginning turned out to be 22, the flights put in the competition was pretty good.
This event is setting a new era for the F3A in the American Continent, and we all hope the next one will be a Continental, the same way Europe and Asia have their own.
It is to notice that even tough this was not an official FAI event, it was taken that way, with weight check on electrics after each flight and noise level check, this means we are all prepared for FAI events sanctions, let's hope we can achieve that.
I will post some pictures taken at the event, but please check this out also.

Great Pictures, Gracias. The background is just incredible.
Could you give us the set up secrets from Jason and Marcelo?
I went on vacations to Margarita in 2006. I will ensure everybodyt that you are going to have a great time there. I need to start to practice F3A.
Gracias,
Vicente "Vince" Bortone
