What's up with Akiba's belt drive? Why is he running a belt drive on a hacker C50? The prop doesn't look like anything special and there is only one prop so it isn't a contra drive. I don't get it.

Maybe he wanted a smaller diameter prop, higher rpm, and to pass sound???

Hmm... wouldn't it be the other way around? Larger diameter, higher pitch at lower RPM?

Looks like he may have replaced the gearbox with a belt drive. Would be as quiet as an outie.

The prop on his plane does not look like a 21 or 22" prop. You are safer to spin a smaller diameter prop at higher rpm, than a longer prop with higher tip speed, in regards to passing sound.

I found a picture for Mr,Akiba's motor unit, sorry for delay. The motor has 2 reduction belts and lighter than gear box unit.

Thanks Tak

it is hard to beleive that this assembly is lighter than a gearbox. I'll bet it is quieter for sure.

That is some nice clever engineering there. And to keep it light as well.

Awesome

Kobago, do you know the function of the metal rings on the back? Is it for additional cooling?

I really love this belt solution!

Volkert
Mr. Akiba said the following thing to me.
These rings are a fillet for cooling.
These fillets are necessary for the hot time of summer.
This is lighter than HACKER Q80-11S F3A.

There was hevy rain in morning so they did only 2 final rounds for complited the championship. Here is final results.

#2,K Suzuki.OS. Mid Rex Bipe.
#3,H Hatta.Hacker.Pegasus.

That's all. Thanks.

It's not a belt drive for the prop.

It's none of the above. It's subterfuge only.

Photo from the Japanese Nats... I think we should employ this here... one has to be within the 2m sticks in order to fly F3A.

The belt system clearly reduces rpm. with so he can spin larger props.

What is interesting and intriguing is that it appears to utilize a much smaller diameter prop!

Must have HUGE pitch!!

Thats what I was thinking. Also there is some power loss (lower efficiency) when you run through a transmission. Belts a quieter that gears, but if I remember correctly (it has been too many years since I took that class in college) belts have greater transmission losses, especially in a two stage reduction like that. If the weight saving is significant, that may make up for it.
