Covering Tips
 

Hey guys,

I am in the process of covering my Xigris C2. Santa also brought me a new camera, so I decided to take some pictures of my covering steps. I am certainly no master, but maybe something can get something out of it. I glossed over some details, but the gist of what is going on is there. Since I already posted to my blog I just saved as a PDF and uploaded it so you can download and read or print.

Hope it helps someone in the middle of a winter project :)

Chad is that Ultrakote or the monokote? I looks great! It's obvious you've done this a few times!

That was a very helpful tutorial for learning how to make great looking covering scheme. I have previously attemepted to do a fancier scheme (other than solid colors or two tone jobs) on a sig something extra and it turned out ok but not great. I definitely learned a few good techniques from your write up that will help me for the next time around. Have you ever done a covering scheme similar to this on an open structure wing? The majority of the planes I build dont have solid sheeted wings which makes it not as convienent to make a nice covering job on. Do you have any tips or techniques for doing a covering job like this for open structured wings?

See told you I glossed over some details lol. This was done with Ultracote. the colors are true red, bright yellow, pearl blue and silver.

Not to jump in on Chad's thread, but I've found it wise to use slightly larger overlaps with Ultracote than with Monokote. Ultracote seems to 'creep' over time, so even if you can do a nice 1/16" overlap it's not a good idea. From his tutorial it looks like he's left plenty.

Side note to Frank: I had a good season with the Focus II and will probably start next season with it.

What's the best temperature for ironing down monokote? Chad is using 125C for Untrakote....is it warmer or cooler for monokote. It seems as though I get bubbles no matter what temp I use.

GREAT INFO :D THIS IS THE KIND OF LEARNING INFO THAT I WOULD LIKE US FOR TO SHARE IN A STICKY SO SOMEONE DOES NOT HAVE TO SEARCH FOR IT HIGH AND LOW.
