Entry Level Pattern

I am thinking of trying the sportsman level of pattern flying next season. The plane I am considering is the Hangar 9 Aresti with a Saito 72 or YS 63. Has anyone used this plane for this purpose? I am also curious to see if it is 3D capable as well. Thanks for any input.

Aresti with Satio!!

Dear Vangard,...

I have a Hangar 9 Aresti 40 with a Saito 72, (see November 2002 issue of Flying Models magazine). The plane is very capable with the Saito 72. I was very impressed with it, especially it's knife edge stability.

At the time I was flying Intermediate category and the Aresti seemed to be compatible with my primary competition plane. Although since I had more time on the primary plane and was more comfortable with it, I never actually competed with the Aresti.

I would highly recommend this combination for Sportsman category!!

Sincerely,
Steve T.

hmm

I have seen a couple of threads about the Aresti and some folks are having trouble with the quality of the ARF- Seems to be some structural concerns....(Just as many people say theirs is just fine though..) I would just give it a good once-over if you get one-

Are you considering any other planes or just the Aresti? You want it for 3D also?

Alot of people seem to like the Venus for beginner pattern and SOME 3D stuff- Remember it is a compromise if you want both...The U-Can-Do "can do" some of each also-

I have the Zen-50 and YS-63 and it is a perfect combo- (for pattern that is ;) )

Good luck and have fun!

The Arresti will rock sportsman, I've seen it myself. I watched a guy wax 2 meter planes with one a couple years ago.

If you want to 3d, the arresti isn't the plane. But then neither is pretty much any pattern plane. There are compromises, but you wouldn't race Indy 500 with the family car would you? Get a plane that's designed to do what you want it to.

That being said, the CA Models Widebody, Epsilon and Zafiro will do a fairly respectable job of both pattern and 3d. The Widebody is more to the pattern side, and the Zafiro is more to the 3d side. If you want to try pattern, by all means don't worry about 3d with the same plane. The setups will be quite different and it will be touchy and difficult to lock it in around center with 3d sized surfaces. It can be done of course, but why?
