Inrunner stuff
 

Just bolted a Neu motor to the nose of my plane. Haven't ran it up yet but sure makes a growl when spinning the prop by hand. Better when it gets faster. Used thick rubber washers between firewall and front motor mount, also rubber washers between bolts and rear of motor mount, so pretty isolated from the airframe.

Obviously hard to quantify online and in words, but does this sound pretty normal?

Yep. You will get the gear grind. I have lubed both of my Neu motors before running them, just because I had someone tell me its not a bad idea. Others have said go fly. I lube mine about every 50-75 flights.

Thanks Arch, good to hear. I personally love the sound of the inrunners in flight, just never played with one up close.

I should have mine ready for Friday's practice before D4 shootout this weekend. Will fly a few days during the remainder of the season, then take apart, lube, inspect, adjust, etc.

I ran the F3A sound check at the Nats this year for a day. . . the only planes to "bust" were electric inrunners. . .
.
Either they really are loud or their pilots don't know how to cheat . .

Just fired it up for the first time. Low RPM growl goes away, definitely has it's own sound.

Right now the only thing that comes to my mind is: holy crap.

What's the suggested procedure for tightening prop nut? Before I could hold the 'can' with one hand and tighten the nut, now nothing to hold on to to get it started.

Hate to say powered up the plane and used the brake.... but I did.

Hold the prop. Same procedure as you would for an ICengine.

Also should I be able to 'wiggle' the motor with only the front mount installed? Or is my 'soft mount' too soft?

There is definitely some vibration.

Joe,

The rear mount is VERY important on the inrunners. Otherwise the motor will wabble around.

The developer of the soft mount is the best resource to tell you how it should behave at rest and under load. "Back in the day" when flying glow I used at least 10 different types of soft mounts over time before settling in on the Hyde mount. The Hyde mount secured the engine at two points and was both firm and allowing very limited movement. I used other soft mounts that allowed very visible movement at the lower RPMs - scary movement. But - they held and were overall secure.

I am using a rear mount, just trying to find a way to gage if I have too much movement or not. Rear mount is carbon screwed to formers at 4 corners, holding the mount with fuel tubing around the inside of the mount.

Unfortunately I am the developer of the mount! Used rubber washers to isolate the mount.

I noticed that the Budd soft mount comes with "very" soft rubber isolators for the Neu motors, so I went with 'softer' rubber as well - not terribly soft, but not hard.

Budd and Hyde mounts won't really work in my plane, fuse is too small.

You could forego the soft mount and firsttry it asin the approach shown inSebart's installation pics for the Hacker inrunner. See how it works out. If there are issues, then trya soft mounted front end.

  I run the Neu as well and use the Hyde mount with it.  After about 30-40 flights, I'll start hearing a vibration that wasn't there before.  I have found that it simply comes from the rear mount not being tight enough.  (What that amount is, I can't answer)  My solution is to wrap electrical tape around just the part of the motor that touches the mount and the vibration disappears.  I don't know if this is suitable for your application but maybe it'll give you a clue.  If there is any sloppiness, you will certainly get that vibration with this motor. 

I agree with Arch, after about 75 flights, take the gearbox off and grease the gears.  It's very simple and F3A Unlimited just came out with some grease for these motors that is inexpensive. <br type="_moz"/>

Tightened up the front bolts a bit more, resecured the rear mount and all seems good for now. Will hopefully get out Friday for practice and see how it goes.

Power is pretty great, 2200W, 7000rpm, 65A and APC 19x12e (new style) prop. Thinking about carbon prop for weight and more rigidity.

Motor sounds pretty cool, it does sound extreme at high throttle, either pushing it pretty hard (1475kV on 10S) or just have to get used to it. Hopefully will hear some others up close at the contest this weekend.

You probably already mentioned but Imissed the type of plane you have this motor in. That prop is rather small in comparison to what a lot of us run. Your plane will dictate what you run but that motor will turn, at the very least (as I've tried them all) these props:

APC 20x15
20.5x14
22x12

Falcon 21x14

Obviously, it'll turn a lot more but those are the props I've tried. I'm surprised you have to go full throttle (or maybe this was just a ground check).

Ya, 1512/3.5d at 1475kV.

Got a full charge reading of 71a, 7000rpm, and 2600w to the motor, 19x12 apc. Power is substantially more than the Scorpion outrunner, but may have cooling issues. Rear support blocks most of cooling flow.

Actually hurts my calves holding the plane back.

Prop came loose, brake is crazy strong so getting rid if it.

Flying pretty good. Had a tough time getting used to the motor during practice on Friday, but flew pretty well today (best scores ever, actually).

Definitely more power, still need to get a feel for the different throttle response, maybe play more with the throttle curve. Doesn't quite have the instant torque feel of the last motor, but probably just need to get used to it. Now have the ability to fly faster than necessary, meaning there is some power in reserve for windy conditions.

Hope to get some good flights in tomorrow and see some real improvement over the last contest 3-4 weeks ago.
