Heli servos for pattern (stab)?
 

Any reason for or against using heli servos in pattern? I found a set I'm interested in - size, weight, and strength are just what I need. They have plastic gears and a speed of 0.1sec (too fast?). They are a decent brand, so I'm only concerned about application.

I prefer heli servo's. They are tpically the best quality at any price point. Fast and good enough torque for pattern. Best of feature of all is they return to centre everytime, no over shoot.

Agreed. I used to the run the heli 9254 and the BLS254 on the elevator of my Black Magic with the DEPS system. The speed and centering is excellent.

Depends entirely on the servo. I tried some of the very fast JR 8717 heli servos on ailerons once and really didn't like them. They are outstanding heli cyclic servos, I use them in several models, but I felt they were a little nervous for a pattern model. So unless someone has some experience with the servo you are thinking of, you're sort of taking a gamble.

A speed of 0.1 sec for elevators is pretty fast. I am using futaba 9650s (rated at 1.1 sec @ 6.0v) and need to dial in -20% exp near the center.

Everybody seems so concerned because of "fast" servos. The servo will only move as fast as you move the stick on the TX. The fast servo will just be more faithful to the stick movement.

Correct.
And they allow you too input corrective actions quickly and remove the command without big movements. i.e. they are more subtle

Now that my sequences include snap rolls I am appreciating the benefits of faster servos.

Nothing like having it stop when you tell it to.;)

While I've not used this brand of servo, they got some pretty good reviews on one of the heli websites. The price is sure right and they are fast and strong. Kryptonite gears and the output is unthreaded if you want to tap for a M3 screw.

To get good scores on most of the pattern sequences, my advice is not to move the elevator stick fast. Rather, you want to move it very gentally around the center and no corrections. You could get better result by loosing some mechanic advantage on linkage so that the stick movement is "amplified". Note that the elevators move no more than +/- 20 or so degrees most of time.

When I put savox servos in my wind s, I was amazed at the change in speed of the aircraft's response. It took a while to get used to, as I had to stop 'leading' the plane, and putting in servo movements before they were required, so the servo would move when I needit it to, and as stated above I had to slow my movements down, things got really good.


I now find that slow servos feel 'slow' and I have to lead with my inputs a lot more.

I have been using Align DS 520 on dual elevators and DS 610 on rudder and after 50 flights it seems to be reliable and precise servoes in a mid size pattern plane. So in my next project i consider to use Align all around.

I should point out that I'm also running a 1258 on rudder and 1251's on ailerons.
