Everyone is familiar with the nasty feeling when you fly in a cloudy dark sky or hazy sky.

The model, no matter what colors it was painted, it always looks black and sometimes it is hard to recognize exactly its situation.

Well no more, with these four 8 Watt leds you can recognize exactly what you are doing in the sky.

Even on a sunny day it was proven that it helps to see the wings better in side maneuvers.

It attracts my attention to the wings level and I feel that it improves my flying.

The energy source is the motor battery and it switches on and off from the transmitter.
The all system weights 90 grams and the energy consumption is about 100 M.A. for 8 minutes flight.

Best regards,

Isaac Najary

Do you have any links for your equipment? Would the same equipment be suitable for a smaller plane? Maybe something .40-.60 sized?

Hi,

The leds and the heat sinks on the wings tips were designed and costume made for the Arixtra.

The Power Supply was designed and manufactured by a friend of mine Sorin from YOARDUTECH.

The Power Supply is suitable for any plane using 2S – 10S battery and the Power output voltage is settable with trimmer from steady 0V to 35V.

Best regards,

Isaac Najary

Another great idea out of your workshop! Do the heat sinks need to be so big? 90 grams could be a lot for some. I am thinking of built in landing lights.

I agree, this is a great idea. Seeing the wings is what makes the young guys so good. I'm surprised there hasn't been a more favorable reaction to this idea and the implementation of it. I think the pattern community is asleep or dead.

I'd love to see it in flight, but I guess I'll have to build one first.

The led heat sinks weigh 25 gram (12.5X2), they have to be that big because the leds get very hot and you need a lot of cooling area so they will not burn.

To avoid them from burning I cannot turn the lights on the ground more than 30 seconds.

The heat sink of the Rc Controller Power Supply unit is very small 9mm X 9mm and weighs only about 3 gram.

Best regards,

Isaac Najary

Isacc, is it possible to pulse the LEDs to reduce the power consumption and heat load? Something like 50% duty cycle at one or two Hertz?

Does the LED driver circuit reduce power automatically at a critical temperature?

Pulsing the LED at 50% is a bad idea because it produces a great EMI noise that can perturb your receiver so it can be a great danger. Beside this the LED don't get to critical temperature because during flight you have a great cooling system with the air that pass your plane. And even you landed you have at least 1 min to reach a dangerous temperature of the LED so plenty of time to turn it OFF. Anyway all this parameters depends with the power you apply to the LED and the size of the heat-sink of the LED and you can test all these on your lab. You can simulate the cooling of the air with a blower or a fan. Isaac did all this tests so he knows exactly that during flight is no problem of overheat and at landing he has couple of tens of seconds to turn it OFF without any danger of overheating. Also the power supply of the LEDs has integrated a auto-reset fuse which will cut the current in case of passing 1.7A of current consumption. So in case of possible broke of the LED most probably the current will climb up and at the end the fuse will disconnect the power supply.

Any other question regarding electronics of this project you can ask on this forum or using my direct email [email protected] or [email protected]
