Help needed

I picked up a Hydeaway today at an estate sale. I promised the widow that the airplane would be returned to the air. Problem is she could not find the chin cowl. If anyone has one I can buy, borrow or repair please let me know. Thanks is advance.

Shawn
Cant help you with a chin cowl since I have never seen one. If you can't find one carve a resemblance out of foam and send it to me and I will pull you one out of carbon fiber.

I don't think either the Hydeout or the Hydeaway had a chin cowl, I believe the engine was exposed as were the header and pipe (2 or 4 stroke power plant).

Well, the airplane is right here in front of me missing a chin cowl.

flywilly 10-02-2016 02:00 PM

Yes it is. Unfortunately, I believe the Hydeaway was produced by ZN Line. They are still in business; so you could try contacting them: http://www.znline.com.

speedracerntrixie 10-02-2016 03:53 PM

You are correct, it has a ZN sticker molded into the fuse just inside the turtle deck. I sent them an email through the site, lets see what they say. I would call this a shot in the dark but who knows. I'm thinking it is going to be about a 15 HR job to carve a plug and pull a mold.

Shawn - Chip is planning on being at the SAM contest this weekend. he might be a very good source!

speedracerntrixie 10-03-2016 10:35 AM

Jon, I was thinking the same thing and sent him a PM yesterday. Haven't gotten a reply yet but have noticed he hasn't been on RCU much lately.

After not gettting any leads on a chin cowl even after talking with Chip, I grabbed up some balsa and CA and was able to come up with this. Now the real fun begins, next will be glassing it and fine tune the fit then pull a mold that I will use once.LOL that's what makes this a hobby right? Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions but looks like good old elbow grease fixes the problem again.

Great job. Looks really good.

speedracerntrixie 10-16-2016 10:36 PM

Thanks, it's Turing out to be a fun project. I wonder if I am building the first electric version. The planned power package is an AXI FAI motor, Jeti Spin 80 controller and Falcon 19x13.5 three blade prop.

Pylonracr 10-17-2016 01:42 PM

ELECTRIC ????? Dude, Slap yourself.

flywilly 10-17-2016 02:40 PM

Looks really good and will probably be as good or better than a commercial replacement!

I know I am sooooo going to miss all the " experts " telling me how much nitro to run, how much oil, what type of oil, what brand of plug, what heat range of plug, fuel dot or fill valve, soft mount or hard mount...............NOT!!!!!! LOL.

Pylonracr 10-17-2016 07:00 PM

I will remember that next time you need more fuel........................

speedracerntrixie 10-17-2016 07:14 PM

Now now, I still have a couple YS powered airplanes, just not any pattern airplanes.

Speedracer

That particular plane started life as an electric and was converted to glo by the second owner.

Now it will be which ESC, motor timing, battery, how much brake, and I think there are soft mounts for electric. Me thinks you jumped from the frying pan to the fire:D

Oh.. you believe it.
Watt inferiority is reaching critical proportions. Like nothing I'd every experience with IC.
I've just read a 16 side thread discussing the pimping of a real cheap/small RTF F3A that I also happen to own. So much uffing and ahhing about the simple cheap no brand prop supplied. 15 sides later with many expensive props, custom props, modified prop ordered and tested by owners and thread subscribers... around the world... The the conclusion was that the prop supplied... was the best! Now they've moved onto the ESC... same story, buying this, testing that. In the mean time, I'm have a blast.

not what I am finding out so far. Set it up once and it works. My other E pattern airplane has proven very reliable and practically maintenance free while providing great performance.
