Pull-Pull rudder end.

Cable: Surflon Nylon coated stainless 1x7 leader, 60 pound test.
Crimp Sleeve number 3, not number 4 as it says on the Surflon package.
Horn: Sam Turner style. Dowel drilled and tapped for 4-40. Hole in rudder cut with brass tubing "saw", same diameter as dowel. 4-40 threaded rod with 4-40 strip aileron fittings make the actual horn.

No big problems, but lots of trimming to do!

With a half dozen flights, the canalizer seems to be functioning properly despite much worry.
Here are some canalizer notes:
1. Use substantial washers under the hold-down bolts to spread the load, about 12-15mm diameter. I made my own from fiberglass sheet.
2. Stiffeners can be made from the following material:
CST #6259 Balsa end-grain carbon sandwich
or CST #C5359 Rohacell carbon sandwich
I found these available at Graves in Orlando.
3. After getting the shims correct for the canalizer incidence, I elected to further seal the bed using the old silicon and Saran-wrap technique. It just seemed like bad mojo to allow a substantial airflow leak from under the canalizer that may affect it's function.
4. With the canalizer incidence set to equal the wing, it seems to match the fuselage hump at the front. Does yours?

How deep is the wing servo well? Is it possible to use a non low-profile servo for the ailerons?

grotto2 08-08-2018 07:14 AM

I didn't remove my servo to measure, but slid a thin piece of metal alongside the front part of it. From the bottom of the well to the bottom surface of the wing is about 40mm. I'm using the servo F3A Unlimited recommends, but it looks like a standard servo will fit.

You will have no issues running a standard servo, my elements have BLS171’s in the wings and fit with no issues.

Ron, Andrew, thanks a lot.

Concerning the rudder servo, I have got a brand new JR NX8931, which is quite heavy (72g if I remember correctly).

If I install it in the tail, do you think I'll have problems in balancing the airplane for proper CG? The airplane will be equipped with the Hacker Q80 motor.

Hi,

I'm at last ready to do final set-up of my Element - Hacker Q80-11S, Falcon 21x14, Jeti Spin 99, JR 8401's Ail & Rud, 3401's Ele.
I've set the wing at +0.5° relative to the tail & starting CG at back edge of wing tube with canopy on.
What should the canaliser incidence be ? - I've read on RCU it should either be 0° or the same as the wing ??
Also what should the down thrust be, not measured mine yet but the nose moulding looks to be more than the typical 1° down ??

Steve,

youll want to match the Tcan to the wing. It should need about 3mm spacers on bottom of the front bolts to get you to the same as the wing.

For the thrust your correct it has a bit more but this works, I have added a slight bit of upthrust compared to the nose. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...8b8a2ec55.jpeg

With this setup you will be running your packs. Pretty far forward, I know with a 45g servo in the tail my battery ended up about half way between the motor and gear.

Hi,
which is the suggested range for the CG in the Element? Between the back of the wing tube and the wing bolts?

Yes, that seems to be the correct CG.
