2023 FAI F3A RC Aerobatics World Championships

I am starting this new thread for the 2023 F3A world champs. This year they are held, once again, in a very far (for most) and therefore expensive country to get to.....Australia! Only 59 souls signed up which may be an all time low record.

Here are the participants:
https://f3a.com.au/2023wch/official-entries-received/

Here is the latest bulletin:
https://f3a.com.au/2023wch/bulletin-2-may-2023/

Let us hear your stories send pictures and congrats to those who still have the energy, drive, and dedication to keep thus elite aspect of our RC hobby alive. F3A is like F1 to me the creme of the crop!
I have great memories competing in the 2003, 2007, and 2009 F3A WC's.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again in Australia, crazy to think how much has happened in the world since the last WC in 2019. Sad to see only 59 pilots signed up, especially with some of the bigger names (Kaiser, Seba, Rombart) not being able to make it, but I can fully understand due to it being a VERY expensive trip (almost 6k for a ticket from a main European hub to Brisbane). I believe 2025 WC is supposed to be in Muncie again, so I still wouldn't expect an 80+ pilot WC again until it goes back to Europe, however it is about half of the cost to fly here rather than down under. Despite the low pilot count, I think it will be a very competitive year, especially for the last few spots in the finals.

Hard for me to believe this is my 5th F3A WC (13,15,17, and 19), nevertheless my motivation is the highest it has ever been. Its almost 30 days until I depart, so I should probably start learning how to drive upside-down here pretty soon LOL.

Cheers,
Joe

Congrats to your dedication and flying skills Joe to make the US team as a senior member now! Wish you all the best and you guys make us proud as a team powerhouse.

Lower and lower participation in the worlds, but the local and regional competitions I think are going up.

Not to feel bad about it, but on the Space Model WC held inAustin, TX, there were 460 entries in total.

So making things more difficult and more expensive in not helping, specially when in Europe we have close to 12 F3A contests between local, regional and EU competitions within driving distances, the only difference is the top pilots not competing against USA and Japan.

If there is one man that should be commended is Marcos Malloy, wow, what a record he has and he's going to Australia too, so happy for him, and such a nice guy.

Hello

Just a quick note from France;
French team is made up of Christophe Paysant Le Roux, Stéphane Carrier , Arnaud Poyet and Antonin PLR in the Junior category.
French championship took place in mid-July near Me.
After an absence of 12 years and a return of about a year and a half; Stéphane Carrier a guy from my club won in front of CPLR (32 times French champion, 9 times European champion and 9 times world champion).

Hello,

Do you know, if on the usual equipment list of this competition, pilots will fill the differents infos about theirs gyros ?
Because, I dont know which one to choose....

Maybe top pilot can help me ?

Best Regards

Freddy 08-13-2023 04:20 AM

This is F3A a skills test no gyros allowed! That would be cheating. Only fingers and hand/eye/ear coordination that is the pure beauty of this sport.

Thanks for the great photos!
i assume CPLR is still flying YS and probably his son also. Are there any other glow powered models there?

bjr_93tz 08-17-2023 03:18 PM

This is 45 minutes down the road for me so I'll be there at 8am Saturday morning to watch the the practice.
The weather isn't too flash today and be a bit windy on Saturday, but it should be great for the rest of the event.

I've got a few days off work next week so hopefully I can get in some quality spectating!

flywilly 08-17-2023 04:09 PM

I envy you, Brett!
The last WC (and only) I attended was ‘89 in Virginia, just the last day. I really enjoyed it.
Have fun and post some photos or videos, if you can.

Thanks Will.
This will be a first for me as I was a bit young and not really into F3A when the Championships were here last time around.

I'm not really a social butterfly, so I'll probably be seen lurking in the background, watching some flights, wishing the Aussie team good luck (Peter and Aaron are in the QLD cohort, I've never met John Tonks), and accidentally stepping on some French, Japanese and US airframes where I can. :o

Hello

Some videos

bjr_93tz 08-19-2023 12:00 AM

I just spent the day watching the pilots on flight line one and I just have to say that in the atrocious wind conditions, the skill and talent of the overwhelming majority of pilots is something that everybody interested in F3A needs to see, even if only once in their life.

Some of the slower airframes were put to the test but for the most part, the pilots and their machines made it appear like it was a calm day. What really struck me was their control over where the machine was, were it was going and no matter the yaw angles, the wings where hitting "level" through the part loops everywhere they would have been if the wind wasn't there.

No photos or videos from me as there's not much to see with an iPhone camera at 50 paces but an international incident narrowly averted? One of those flags started out next to the USA flag before getting shifted next to Germany. Bring on the good weather from tomorrow.
