Beginner Pattern Plane
 

Hi guys,

I was looking for some kind of beginner pattern plane. I was looking for one with an engine around a .46-.90 2 stroke. Any ideas?

If you want to stick to the 40-46 size, try a Great Planes Venus. Excellent plane for that size and money. Flies very, very well.

Well I was just about to post the same question. Could those of you with advice please post replies to the topic not just PM to the original poster?

Any opinions on the Kaos (now from Tower) or any of the Stinger models, or am I just putting a exclamation mark on the fact that I am a pattern novice?

On the smaller models 46 sized....

H9 Aresti is good, and so is the GP Venus.

Going up a little in the size. The 90 sized arfy's seem to fly well.

Quest 90
Swallow 90


I would highly consider the Quest or the Swallow on a YS 110 or Saito 100. Also the OS 91 FX is a good running motor too.


Going up to larger models the Focus 2 is a higher priced model and will run great on a YS 140 Sport or the Webra 145/160 or the OS 140RX. And then of course there is the King of the Pattern engines the YS 140DZ

This is starting to drift into the higher priced stuff....but will suit the beginner well also.

My suggestion to a beginner is to get good equipment. Good servos they don't need to be $100 each digitals....but get a good coreless servo with good power. These servos will help you get the most out of the model and the radio gear. A good servo is the JR 811 digital sport servo...its not coreless but is a great value at around $50 each....they are super precise digital technology and ball bearing so they are smooth....Now they dont perform like the $100 servos but they are the best bang for your buck. Servos are important...just because the aileron moves doesn't mean its as precise as you can make it.

Properly setup any of these models above can be a great learning tool. Remember pattern flying makes you fly better...you can do it with a Alpha trainer if you want.....The key is putting the the model in the sky in the right spot. The more dedicated the design in terms of being a full blown pattern model the easier it is to do the maneuvers....but in the first several classes at least Sportsman and Intermediate...you money is best spent on servos and fuel than expensive pattern models...


Once your skills get better you will know when its time to upgrade models!

Its hard to beat a Kaos as a first pattern plane. It will do anything you want - I suggest the 60 size.

The Viper 91 is also a good choice, It will use the OS91 fx or a YS 91/110. The plane is hand crafted and is a great piece of woodworking.. The plane is ready to cover with a little work to finish it up. There is also a carbon fiber options for it.. the weight is around 8lbs and mine uses the OS 91FX swinging a APC 15x10 prop with tank on cg and ONLY pipe pressure, no header tank or pump.. The plane is great for starting out and will move you thru the diffrent classes, Tech support is a phone call away and there is also a Viper in the 2 meter size.You can't beat the price for this handcrafted plane...

I have a Great Planes Dazzler. Isn't this very similar to the Kaos? If so, I don't think that it would make a good first pattern ship. Just my 2 cents. While I really enjoy flying it, some of the pattern (FAI) guys at my field have flown it and don't think it has what it takes. Opinions?

the dazzler is compleatly different from the Kaos i have a kaos and it flys nice for a first pattern plane.......i had to use it as back up in my first contest and this year i will make mods on my kaos so that it fly more like a modern plane.

I have an OS .61FX in my Venus. (7.8 lbs)
It is mounted with the plug in the 8 o'clock position, so the stock muffler hangs out the bottom of the cowl.
Plenty of zip for the power grabing outside loop, 1/2 square loop with half roll, and the stall turn with full roll.
The only downside is it's a small plane, and like any craft of that size, it's "flighty", as opposed to "groovy". (compared to a 2meter pattern plane)...croz

I would try the Widebody 60 or 40. They build real easy and fly extremely well.

2 rolls, did your venus really end up almost 8 lb? I have one stock with OS 70II and huge 1800 nicad, and it came out a little less than 5 1/2?? Typo?? If that's not a typo, and it's stock, I'd be lobbying for a replacement. You should be able to put a 1.60 on it and be <8. that should pull pretty good ;-)

I'll cast my vote for the venus... Best small pattern plane I've ever flown.. My dream is a 2m Venus.. I wrote GP begging for a 120 size, maybe they'll do it one day.....

Should be a building but here I am again......a few years back Hanno Pretner (excuse spelling all) had come to compete with designs of increasing complexity I do think yes even variable pitch propeller: then a little fairy appeared as his guest--NOOOOOOOOOOO not that one.... and the fairy said make it simple and TRUE-So home he flew-cause he had something to do- there at his work bench he sit and he sat- but we won't get into that-when out of the blue- with some pink for visability as a clue- he then drew- that "SUPRA FLY sure flew-
