Looking for a pattern plane for 1.20 2 stroke engine and pipe.
 

I'm interested in moving up to a 1.20 size airplane, but don't want to get into an equipment race with a composite fuselage, plug in wings, etc. I've been flying a .60 Boxer and like it's simplicity and all balsa/foam construction. Is there an all balsa/foam airplane out there I don't know about for 1.20 2 stroke? What about a 2 meter Boxer? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

How about a Zen120. That actually sounds racey, and the Zen family of planes is very decent.

DGrant - thanks for your reply. I just checked out the Zen 120 on the World Models website, and it seems to be designed for a 1.20 4 stroke. My experience has been that the pipe tunnel may be too small for the 1.20 2 stroke pipe, and require modification of the fuselage - a problem with ARFs . I guess what I'm looking for is a plane designed for the 1.20 2 stroke engine and pipe.

I think your right. I don't recall seeing the bigger Zens running anything but 4-strokes. Oh well :) The thought is kind of entertaining though. The planes do handle real well. If I see anything else that's interesting though, I'll report back to your thread here. Good luck. Also, if you find something post it back here. I'd be interested to know whats out that is a decent 2-stroke 120 bird. :)

Take a look at the Aeroslave Entropy.

It is a modified version of the Prophecy, but lighter. Aeroslave is also local to you and me. There are a couple of them going together in the Dallas area. At 9.5ish pounds a 1.20 2 stroke will pull it fine, and the pipe tunnel is large enough for a 2 stroke pipe.

You wouldn't happen to have a set of plans for the Boxer 60 you would like to sell? I have been wanting a copy, but they are not available anymore.

As for the 120 sized airplane, if you are into scratch building, the Gator Typhoon 2000 is all wood, and can be powered with a 120 2 stroke.

I'm finishing up a Fivol II which is an early 90's design pattern plane with a one piece wing, and designed for a 120 4 stroke. I'm putting a Bully 120 2 stroke in it, and had to make extensive modifications to get the pipe to fit. It was not easy, but do-able.

Bob Pastorello has modified the EMC2 to run the Super Tigre 2s. At one time he had quite an extensive series of how toos on his website. That would be Oklahoma Pattern but i don't know the exact address. :)

Pug, I wish I could help you out, but my first Boxer met with an untimely end and I'm currently flying the second as my main pattern plane.

I think someone with a flair for business and R/C needs to pick up where Gus left off and continue with the Boxer line of airplanes. I'd buy a 2 meter Boxer in a minute. I still have a 120 Boxer all cut out and ready to build - I just have to get around to it. It's designed for the 120 4 stroke engine though, and the pipe tunnel is too small for the 2 stroke pipe. I guess I'll just have to build it and make the necessary modifications.

Keep your eye on eBay - I've seen several Boxers there over the last couple of years.

Are there any upconing pattern events in the Dallas area. I'm in Seagoville (near Mesquite). I flew pattern in the 80's and early 90's and then got out. Thinking about getting back into pattern. I am in the process of building a Conquest 6 for an YS 60FR that I have NIB (old short stroke 2c) just to fly around. I have also started an SL 1 that I found NIB a few weeks ago. WOuld like to put my YS 120 in it. Any thoughts on whether to make the planes fixed gear tail draggers or put retracts in it.

Thanks for your reply. I have my calendar marked for August 24-25 for a contest in New Waverly (near Houston), Sept. 14-15 in North Dallas, August 27-28-29 in Lubbock. I hope to make the New Waverly and North Dallas contests - I'll have to wait and see on the Lubbock event. Check the AMA rag for details.

I checked out the Bridi 2X2 Dirty Birdy on his website, and it looks like he's simply upscaled an older design. I flew an Escape in competition back in 1994, and it had a few flight characteristics I wasn't crazy about. I went from that to a Boxer 60 and wow, what a difference. If he had a "new" design - something with some of the more recent (1990s at least) flying refinements - I'd go for it. The designs from the 70s flew great - back then - but they've been eclipsed by more recent designs.

Ed, I forgot to reply to your question about retracts vs. fixed gear. I like retracts for several reasons. If you fly off of grass, the retracts will probably outlast wheel pants, and I like the look of retracted gear better than fixed. Lastly, if you have to land in the weeds due to flame out, etc. you can kiss your fixed gear good bye. I like to retract the gear and belly land when this happens.

I fly fixed gear off a grass field that is not perfectly smooth. The secret on the wheel pant is to use a flex mount setup, I use a 5/32 steering arm that you screw the end into the ply mounting plate inside of the pant. I have had no problems with this setup and fly almost 85% of my flights(about 300) off of grass. Most of the new 2 meter planes are using fixed gear. The drag difference isnt as important as it was a few yearsback. Seems most of the new designs are getting draggier due to wanting constant speed in the downlines.
Maybe I have been lucky but only one time did I have to land mine off the runway and that was in short grass no damage.

ONE NOTE: You have to fly the sportsman class with gear down. All other classes it is optional.

Most guys around here are flying them with os or webra 2 strokes and have power to spare. I have built 2, one for me and one for a friend, very nice kits, and the plane flies itself !

I just bought a FOCUS ARC - great price (don't have it yet :( ).
I have a DIck Hanson Elan with the firewall installed and the stab cores sheeted that I'd sell if you're interested. I was going to put a Bully 1.20 in mine.
