kit recommendations
Does anyone know of a good kit for a pattern plane in the 60-90 size? I am mostly looking for a good plane to fly for fun, but would like to get into the pattern scene and I need a good plane. I do not want an ARF or ARC. Also, I would probably put a 2 cycle engine in it.

The only "wood kits" that I know of for pattern planes were the Bridi line of kits, (unless you don't mind spending a bundle of money for the MK line of kits). The Bridi XLT is still available through Bluejay Airplane kits. Also the Killer Kaos is available from Bluejay. www.bridiplanes.com If you can find a Bridi Escape or Great Escape on ebay those are more recent and current. If you don't mind working with fiberglass fuselage and foam wing & stabs; quite a few are available from Precision Aero Composites http://www.precisionaerocomposite.com/ Personally I like the LA-2!! Hope that helps. If you know exactly what you are looking for, built-up wood kit versus fiberglass and foam, I might be able to come up with a few other suggestions. Let me know what you deside!! Widebody 60 from CA Models, it's the best plane in it's class currently available. It flies very close to a 2 meter pattern plane. (Gee I'm recommending that plane a lot lately....Marcello should be hookin me up or somethin!)

the zimpro has a plane for the 90 size that is a wood kit, other wise i would go with the WB 60

Another vote for the Widebody 60. Put a good 60 or 91 in it, and it will be a great pattern or sport plane. My Widebody flies almost as nice as my 2 meter plane.

You won't be disappointed....except in the way the cowl fits, that was my only beef with that plane. Other than that, it's awesome all the way from the box to the air.

It would be a little weak in the verticals with a .91 four stroke. Even with a 91 2 stroke, it flies great, but just needs a little extra punch over the top. -Mike |

If the manufacture's claim of a flying weight of 6.7 pounds a .91 four stroke should work well. Does it actually weigh more than this?

I love my WB! It flys real smooth, and The 91 FX I have in it is a good match. Great pattern (I fly advanced and this is my primary plane) and I am going to try out a 15X6 prop next to play with the 3-d stuff next. I put flaps and two extra servos on mine, and I came out at 8 lbs. with out the flaps it would have been about 7.3-7.5 lbs, which is about average from what I have seen. It flys Knife edge loops and hovers at 8 lbs with the 2C, and the flaps are fun to play with, and are not at all necessary. I just wanted a model that I could do all the cool radio stuf with.

I have a YS 91 in mine and for at least the advanced pattern, it's plenty of power. Verticals are similar to my Eclipse with a 140L. A 110 would probably be ideal in that you would never even question as to whether you had enough power, and you'd be able to 3d with it. Mine will hover, but you can't pull it out, it is limited in that respect. For pattern though its a great match. If they made a 120/140 sized wooden version I'd probably hang up my Eclipse, it flies that good.

If you don't mind cutting your own parts, there is always the Boxer which is a terrific flying model. There's an ad in the Marketplace for the plans.

Ok, I was assuming he wanted a plane for Novice ...err Sportsman class. For that class I would think a 90 four stroke would be sufficient, even at 7.5+ pounds.

Yep - for sportsman. I have a Phoenix 6 from the 70's in the rafters that is about 1/2 done. Might finish that and put in an OS60FSR pump to get my feet wet.
For engines to use in today's airframes I have an OS 91FS pump and an OS 150 in a GP Giles. Nothing between. Being basically cheap I will be looking for an airframe for one of these engines. Darn 11 lb. limit[:'(] Thanks Hank |
