3-Blade Prop

There is a Engel carbon fiber 3- blade prop up for auction on Ebay - 16x10. How will this work on a USA STAR 2M with a YS140FZ motor? Secondly, would like to start working with 3-blade props and could use any and all info - where to start, what sizes, any airframe issues. Thanks - Steve

RE: 3-Blade Prop

Hello Steve. Here is a forum that hit the points of a 3-bladed prop vs. a 2 bladed prop

BTW: Still have that Bootlegger?

RE: 3-Blade Prop

Hey Mark, thanks for the info - very helpful. As for the Bootlegger, I let it go. I just had to much stuff in my basement and couldn't start any new projects. Did I ever fly it, no - an thats OK. It really had more of a presence from way-back-when.

Regards, Steve

It was (hopefully still is) a beautiful plane. I found one that is particle.... but a good foundation. Who ever received yours, received a deal. Good luck with your search on the 3 bladed props.

RE: 3-Blade Prop

There can be major differences in three blade props from one brand to the next.

Three that I have tried are
APC http://www.centralhobbies.com/props/3-blade.htm
Bolly http://www.bollyprops.com/carbonprops.html
GRS Models (Clevland props).

I found the APC to be the quietest of all and best overall performance. However in order to get one on the pitch range your thinking they would have to be custom twisted or re-pitched as APC offers only a 15.75x13 for our range of engines. Dave Lockhart will repitch one for you to a 11 or 12 pitch. The 13 pitch works OK with my 1.70 Mintor but is too much for the OS 1.40.

The Bolly props tend to fly about two pitches lower then comparitive props. By this I mean if the Bolly is a 16x12 it would be like an APC 15.75 x10 and wher ethe noisiest of the three.

The GSW prop I am currently using is a 16x11. It works well with my OS 1.40 and noticably slow then the APC 17x12 2B. It however has a much different sound to it but is fairly quiet. It is also 1 oz lighter then the APC 2B and about 1.5 lighter then the APC 3B.

Your milage may vary since your are running 4c's and I am tryuing to slow down a two stroke.
