ST 90 Header
 

Hi guys,
Does anyone know where I can find a header for a Super Tigre G90? I want to lose the beer can muffler that came with it and try a tuned pipe. The MACS 2970 series is apparently no longer made. Does anyone have one to sell? Any information on how to go about building one? Thanks

Mac's products makes pipes suitable, like the 1090 or 1290, and they also offer side-exhaust headers.
If you need a custom header, Karl Mueller - [email protected] is the place to go. He does excellent quality work to the dimensions you spec.

Overwhelming respose to this one! I thought the ST 90 was a popular engine...maybe in other rc circles. Thanks for your response Bob, yes the MACS pipes are what I want, just need the header. I had also heard about the Karl Mueller header but can't justify $50 for this plane!

Part of the reason you may not see many ST's in this forum is due to several factors, IMHO. Having been one of the early adopters of the ST 2300 for a 2m pattern bird, it's not a "bolt and go" setup. Plus, MOST ST's are known as "rpm" motors, meaning their available torque band is higher than some others. For us, this translates to lighter pitch props, which means more NOISE, thus, no players.

I was "this close" to choosing the ST 90 for my Excelleron when I saw the Tiger Shark 91 from Kangke. It looked like (and so far runs like) an exact clone of the OS 91FX. If it goes sour, I probably WILL try the ST, as I really like them, and have found them to be powerful motors once one "figures out" the carb/pipe/needle/nitro stuff.

Most (no insult intended, here) pattern guys want to "buy, bolt, fly".... and I like to "buy and try"....

Hi Bob, I always trust and respect your knowlege, as I have been following your posts for some time now. Your web page helped me get reliable runs out of my ST 2300, ended up with the Perry carb and pump. That engine is presently on a GP Giles 202, and when I crash it (not if) I will be looking to build my first 2 meter pattern plane (maybe a Typhoon 2000). The ST 90 is on a Bravo 303 pattern plane, but the stock muffler is a whopper! Tower sells a ST header for the 90 but are out of stock till January, maybe I'll wait for that and use a MACS pipe on it. Do you have any other info on making your own headers? I saw the bit about brazing sections on your web page. How about using brass? Do you think the thin wall type commonly available to hobbiests would hold up? Not sure about bending that stuff without kinks and slow cooling of brass causes brittleness (opposite of steel). Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

I gave up on doing my own headers because Karl's are so much better. By the time I ruined parts, ran around trying to FIND parts, then the hit or miss of self-brazing, IF I was successful they were extraordinarily heavy. Not good. So I go with Karl's. It's worth it to me.

I ended up making my own one, to get the right radii on the pipe to not stick out the side of my plane too much.

I think that ST did or still do a header pipe for the G90.

I work in the marine industry here in Western Australia, so to get most aluminium parts is easy, most of it is cut from scrap.

I cut a flange to suit the G90, bent a peice of ø19.05 aluminium tube to a 45˚, crimped one end to fit the flange and got the boys to weld the two together.

I then drilled and tapped the flange to allow me to use 2 x m4 cap screws. and spent the rest of the week polishing it.
