Pattern And Gas
Hi,
Just woundering if I could fit my MVVS 26cc Gas engine to my 73" Saphir pattern. Has any one done that before? is it ok to fit a gas into pattern ships? if not, why? Appreciate any input Happy Holidays |

I would love for someone to come out with a pattern plane for gas. Unfortunately, the weight limits make it almost impossible. I was interested in the Spectre but, with my job and hours, for the next several years scratch building is out of the question. When someone comes out with an ARF for gas I will jump on it. |

I don't think that there is much diffrence in wieght between the OS 120 supercharge which recomended to the Saphir, and the MVVS 26 Gas, with the ignetion i'd guess a pound or at max a pound and a half, I'll check into it and keep u posted.
But is wieght the ONLY issue?? if so, I'm ready to add the -+2lb to the Saphir and give it a try. any other known issues? Thanks |

Power to weight is the issue, and then making weight with enough power. That's the main issue.
The other issues are vibration, noise, and heat. All of these problems can be overcome if you want it badly enough. There's just not really a drop in plug and play sytem just yet. Sort of like electrics. It's doable, but you have to really want to. -Mike |

I agree with Mhester, you have to want it bad enough, if something is impossible just means it will take a little more time.

Hi All, The link above is for a gas/electric specific pattern plane. Of course, you can install whatever motor you like, but the light weight is aimed at the customer being able to install either gas or electric setups. Gas is not quite plug-n-play yet, but in my opinion it is much less daunting to go from glow to gas, than a dedicated glow user to electric. The ZDZ 40 RE setup basically is 23 oz heaview than my Webra 160 setup. On the current plane I'm converting, I will need to transfer 8 oz to the tail, which is being done via elevator mounted servos, moving the battery back to the tail, some lead, etc. Thus, my nice Gator 202 is going to weigh in around 12.25 lbs when finished. However, this plane has over 1100 sq" wing area so it really shouldn't be a problem and I don't plan on flying it in the pattern nats, which is essentially the only time in America when a pattern plane is weighed and measured. With my Saphir, it's allready tail heavy with an OS 120 Super Charge on it.
I think I'm going for it, I'll just calculate the wieght difference and check if the few extra wieght will bare the wing area. Vibration wise, well, Blue locktite here I come. Noise, no bother "I'm in the desert";) Heat=Lots of ventlation. I'll go for it, and I'll keep you guys updated. Happy Holidays |

Sounds like I should start looking for a ZDZ40! I guess my G26 doesn't pack the suds and my G38 power to weight ratio won't cut it. Maybe my GT80 on a shock flyer:D
