Adjustable stabilizers?
 

Just got a used pattern plane and it looks like it uses adjustable stabs. See pic below. I've never had these before and am not sure what brands are out there and how to set it up. Could I just mount a carbon fiber tube through the hole and make it rigid? I won't be competing with the plane.

Look for a screw up inside in the bottom. This screw moves the block with the hole in it up and down. This keeps the other tube constant and raises and lowers the tube that passes through the block. This is how many of the Japanese and Chinese models are built. Its a very effective way of adjusting the stab. This is a similar concept to the Gator Wing adjusters rather than the Gator stab devices. Its like a Jack screw type of thing. usually its a socket head screw up in there. This makes for a single adjuster!

It is a different type of device than a Gator STAB Adjuster.

I have used this type before and like it is very simple.

If you bought the model used and its been flown chances are the stab is set already. Just use the setup that is there. Then you can adjust it from there. If needed. Look for the hole in the belly of the fuse...Only a small hole that gives access for a ball driver to go in and catch the "jack screw"


This system by the way doesn't allow for different changes side to side as both stab halves move together. Its a single adjuster that does both sides and looks to be already built into the fuse. Use it!

The only thing you have to check for, if you decide to use a dowel or CF tube, is will your stab be in the proper plane when you use the fixed dowel. In other words will using the fixed dowel will you have the proper incedence. Once you glue in the dowel that's what you've got, no way to change it to make the plane fly better. If you are going to fly for sport, not to compete, it might be just fine for your application. In my opinion, since it's seems to be already set up for adjusters, I'd give them a shot. If they don't work for you, give me a shout and I'll buy them from you, just to have in the shop.
