Remote glow setup

I had a lot of people on the NSRCA list asking for pics of my remote glow setup. I can't take credit for the idea since I found the idea posted somewhere else. Just replace the glow plug clip with a small "hitch pin" and you will never have one come loose again. I have hundreds of flights on this setup and it has been flawless. I found the clips at Sears Hardware for under a buck for 4 pcs.

Hey Chris.... not to crash your post but here is an alternative way to this issue that has worked well for me. I have done this before I saw the way you are doing it. So are the many methods we pattern dudes come to a solution.

Enjoy

This is how I do mine. It is thin music wire and make the figure 8 by
bending the wire around two small finishing nails and silver soldered to the
wire. I used regular phone jacks for the remote. This figure eight method
has worked the best for me. It stays on and it will swivel on the glow plug
stem allowing for movement of the engine. Solder the wires with silver
solder and use a piece of shrink wrap at each solder joint even on the plug.
The shrink wrap helps stress relieve the solder joint and insulates it. I
then made the plug in with banana connectors that will plug into my Radio
South glow driver. All you have to do is squeeze the open end together and the clip releases from the plug.
The one you see in the photo's has been in that plane for over a year and
never a problem.

Looks good for an OS.
What about for a YS, which has the glowplug deeper in the head?
What can we use?

Great.. The more, the better. Isn't this how we make improvements for all to benefit? After all I got the idea from someone else's post.

Works same way just bent it to fit.

One more tip on any solder joint - apply a generous amount JBWeld to the wire and insulation, then install the heat shrink. Clean up the excess after shrinking. Guaranteed the wire won't break at the solder!

Wayne, this is a nice and simple solution. I like it.

If you need any teflon coated wire to make the leads, let me know

Yes.... teflon coated wire. Where can you get that stuff. I have run out of my supply. I used regular coated wire on one of my planes and it hasnt melted...YET! must not be close enough to anything.

I will take you up on the offer.

I found a great way to ignite glow plugs. Your local NAPA auto parts store has a spinner rack of small parts, and one of them is a "Ford cigarette lighter connector". Sorry, I don't have a photo or P/N right now. It is an insulated 90 degree metal clip with about 4" of wire. You can squeeze the clip SLIGHTLY and it will not come off a plug without help. I'll try to post P/N tomorrow.

This is a great idea for the plug end, what about the connector for the glow driver?
Can you buy the connectors that fasten onto the plane or is there a trick to make them from a bad glow plug?

For about $5.00 you can buy the Sullivan Head Lock Charging Jack P/N M 020

Radio shack also has some power plugs in their little drawers in the back. One is a panel mount socket, and then mating plugs are there. You can see these on Waynes pictures above. The connectors from radio shack are a buck or two a piece.
I also converted my prodriver using the same connectors.

I couldnt find the little hair pin clips like Chris shows so I bent one up out of wire like Wayne shows.

Scott Smith - who sells the Remote Charging connector? Cannot find on Sullivan's Shopatron, nor Tower....any suggestions? This would be one of those things you probably don't have to buy often, or many of, so maybe a batch order....

Chris, I found those hairpin clips, a couple of different versions that will be perfect. Thanks for posting the pic and source!

Bob: Sullivan has them under "Model Products" dummy glow plw is # M020. Go to the Sullivan site and click on "Model Products Line". Also Maxx prod sells a dummy glow plug too.

Here is my remote glow set up.Its from TY1 and the purple plug cap is just like the one on your car, just not push fit.You pull on the red cable and a spring loaded clip inside the "boot"opens which you put over the top of the plug. The red wire goes to the dummy plugs centre and a black wire is screwed to the outside of the dummy plug and goes to any ground you want on the engine. My ground isnt hooked up yet .But to a head screw or back plate screw is all you need.

These are only $8 here in OZ so you yanks should have something cheap like this as a kit.

Forget the glow clip... is that an OS mixer needle you have on the RX? I have the same unit and have considered it an option for my RX... just haven't been sure how it goes when using a Hyde mount. Dosen't the side ways wooble have and effect? How about the stresses and strains waring out the threads etc etc. If it was a remote needle fixed to the fire wall it wouldn't be an issuse but how does it go with the Hyde?

I have found these not to be very resistant to vibration, and have had to repair them frequently since starting to use them over the last few months. The main issue to me seem the lack of heat shrink, so the solder is taking full impact of the vibration. I have now got into the habit of desoldering the joints on the jack end, putting on the required heat shrink, and resoldering. This seems to cure the problem, but still early days.

I do like the MK charging jaks though, far nicer than glow clips.

I FINALLY located those Sullivan Parts.... Quantum Hobbies was the only place that had them. They will let me build the custom clip thing using ual767's clips and mattk's teflon flex wire....I'll post back a pic here when I do that!
Thanks, Everyone!

Anyone have any idea whether these car body clips are close to the right size? The bent clip I made works fine, but I would spend a couple bucks to get a dozen.

The local Lowe's had the little baggies of the clips in the hardware section. The clips I bought are .032 dia wire, with a 3/32" holding place.

There's a lot of little automotive parts that could have a lot of other applications! Like the "Body Posts"....

RE: Remote glow setup

I just got some of the Teflon flex wire like Matt K. has and it is nice stuff and looks to be very durable. The secret I believe to the remote plug is the fact that the clip on the plug is allowed to rotate on the plug stem. The little c-clip or the figure 8 method both provide this movement. The heat shrink on the solder joints on both the clip and at the plug connection both give an added amount of protection and support. Matt K. also suggest wrapping the solderjoint with plumbers Teflon tape and then shrink wraping over that for additional protection. Using silver solder I think is a must in any high stress solder joint. All great ideas and will work for most applications.
After a couple of years of wearing out glow driver end connectors and reaching underneath the airplane to removing it to find it either just falls off or hangs up on the plug have I come to appreciate a good remote glow setup. Its worth every bit of planning and installation.

(Shamless plug) http://www.radiosouthrc.com/pro_driver_mkii.htm
And to all those still using a regular glow battery.... chunk it and invest in the Radio South glow driver pack. Its worth every penny you spend on it. I put bannana plug connectors on mine so that I can interchange glow plug driver clips. I use one for the plug on my remote setups and a Dubro clamp on for my sport planes. The radio Souith driver uses 4 NmHd batteries and the driver will pass just enough current needed to make the plug hot enough. If its flooded it will pass more current and if a plug is dead it is indicated on the unit as no lights. Guys at the field are constantly needing to borrow mine when thiers is failed or not working...or there is a failed plug and mine will indicate it.

Smooth FLying...

Mornin'

I have been using the Hanger 9 remote glow system, until the last pattern event of the year. My igniter was a little weak and the power loss through the wire wouldn't get me enough juice to the plug. I just cut the lead off and went back to reaching under the cowl to use my igniter directly. For the pattern contests this year, I'm going to be using the new Radio South MK III.
All of my cowled sport planes will still get the Hanger 9 unit.

Anymore updates on the glow clip you have been using? The other post mentioned 3/32 wire diameter in some commercial clips; is that about the size wire you are using?
Thanks
