RE: OTOP PICS!!!
How about some more OTOP flight reports guys !!
Still waiting on mine to arrive from Thailand, trying to be patient. tommy s |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hi Julian,
YS160 is probably the best tool for the job. Phil or Pete at Probuild give a great service. Let me know when you have flown the Otop I am interested in one. Where are you based I am in Devon. All the best Steve Morris |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
What's the best motor for this model? |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
I was at planes plus ...nice price ..but does any know if there are a european or thai\singapore place they sell it???

RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hi everyone of the OTOP fan.
I purchased an OTOP-XTREME plane at last, too. I haven't received only a YS160DZ engine with yet. Therefore, I am assembling it slowly. So, one worry occurred in me. It is a problem about the fuel tank. I must put a fuel tank on a carbon pipe for the main wing. And, I must remove a tank every time a main wing is installed. This thing is very troublesome for me. Does anyone know an easier method? [:o] thanks kobago |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hey Kobago,
I'm flying one with the 160DZ and all I have to say is wow! It has more power than any airplane I've had. I built a false floor in the canopy and the tank is located there. Greg Grigsby |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Greg,
I talked to Carla at Planes Plus tuesday and my OTOP has finally arrived from Thailand and is on it's way to Houston. Any issues I should know about before I start assembly ? What kind of elevator linkage did you use ? Are you happy with how it flies ? Thanks Tommy |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hey Tommy,
I've got a total of 6 flights on it. First observations are good. I'm using a MK Bellcrank on elevator. The canopy holes did not line up so I had to redo that. Everything else went together pretty well. The YS and Central Hobbies header fit completely inside the cowl. You need to cant the engine to get it and the header inside. The wheel pants are a little small in my opinion and I kept them off until I go to a contest. Tons of power. The control horns are a little flimsy. The way they want you to put the elevator and rudder servo make it difficult to get to the elevator servo. I thought the airplane might be a little fast but I was mildly surprised at how constant the speed was. I'm waiting on a 4 bladed prop to try. In my opinion it's one of the best values on the market. RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Thanks Greg,
I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm putting a new YS 1.40 DZ in it so power should be a non issue. I'm usually pretty patient but I've been real impatient waiting on this one to arrive , my fault though as I ordered a custom finish. Thanks again tommy s PS: If you would like some very nice carbon fiber wheel pants look on the Wings Pro web site. They're going out of business and selling everything at 50% off. I got some Flying Star carbon pants from them and they are some of the best I've seen , very smooth with no visible seam and very light. They look so good they don't even need to be painted. |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hi Guy's,
Seems there are a few similarities between the OTOP and the Impact. Firstly the fact that they are both made in Thailand (ok, no big deal), Secondly the construction of the airframe components, glass - foam - glass, Thirdly, the way that the fin & rudder goes together, robarts - rounded edges to fin t/e & rudder l/e - unsupported areas on the rudder hinge pin line, even the carbon wing tube support rings with the integral wing bolt retaining points are identical! Is there some thing we are not being told here? Mystified....................... |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Just received my OTOP from Planes Plus and I am at a loss for words to describe it. I
expected it to be nice but the level of craftmanship and finish is above anything I expected. It is absolutely gorgeous !! The paint scheme and colors are EXACTLY as I ordered them. The OTOP and the Impact are both made in Thailand but I would guess they are not built by the same people because I have seen several Impacts but never one that is as nice as this OTOP. It took two months to get here from Thailand but the wait was definitely worth it. I got a pleasant surprise when I opened the box as the wings, stabs, wingtube, and fuselage were all shipped in their own custom made, padded, velcro closed bags which I wasn't expecting. Very nice added feature. This has got to be the best value in pre-built airplanes I have ever seen. I can't wait to see this one fly but I'm going to be very careful assembling it as it would be a sin to put a scratch on this finish before it flies. I'll let you know how it goes. Its flight performance is the only thing that could make this any better. Thanks to Carla at Planes Plus , very nice lady to do business with. tommy s |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hey Tommy,
Keep it in the bags. It dents!!!! How bout pics? Greg |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hey Greg,
I'll try to post some pictures ASAP if my better half will let me use her digital camera. I already knew about the denting so I'll be careful. Very nice airplane isn't it ? Thanks tommy s |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Pictures Tommy, pictures!!!

RE: OTOP PICS!!!
I tell ya, the more I fly it the more I like it. I thought it would present small but it doesn't.

RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Greg,
The pipe tunnel is interesting in the way they have the mount already in there and the way they show the pipe to be mounted. What type of mount did you use with your ES Composites pipe ? I am using an ES pipe also. I see what you were saying about the elevator and rudder servos being close together. tommy s |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Tommy,
Are u going to bring to Nederland? Mark |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Mark,
I'll bring it but I can't see it being ready to fly by that time, I don't want to get in too big a hurry and screw something up. I want to ask Buddy and Larry about the rudder mounting on their Impacts anyway , same system on the OTOP. The 1.40 DZ is new and will need to be broken in also. I'm still trying to decide on the elevator linkage , I have an MK bellcrank and a D.E.P.S system also and I'm sorta leaning towards the D.E.P.S. because it seems to be a lot lighter and a lot simpler once it's installed , less moving parts (cheaper too). Switched the Excelleron back to PowerMaster 30% and the 1.10 is running the way it should now. I just couldn't make it run right on the Magnum fuel , spits out a lot less oil with the PowerMaster also. The Excelleron is a good airplane , it's the pilot that needs work ! tommy s |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Tommy,
Did you get this plane purchase cleared with STAIN (South Texas Aerobatics Inspection Nerds)? I didn't think anyone in far South Texas (especially in Houston) was allowed to have any new pattern plane other than an Insight. Watch out for Mark, he's going to be pissed! :D BTW, congrats on the new plane, please bring it to Nederland so we can ogle at it! Keith B |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hey Tommy,
I didn't use those hardpoints. I use the hatori strap and pipe mount. Attach a lord mount in the back past the pipe, twist the strap and attach the strap to the pipe mount and the lord mount. Nice and soft and I've never had any issues doing it this way. Greg |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Greg,
Thanks, good idea on the pipe mount. Keith, I kinda snuck the order in at night without permission so noone would know until it was too late !!!! Seriously, I hope it flies as good as Marks Insight , it sure looks the part. tommy s |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Have anyone noticed that it pulls to the gear in Knife edge? and if you did notcie it, what was your fix?
|
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Hey Robert,
Mine doesn't do that but it would have been nice if it had wing adjusters. Greg |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
I thougt this string was dedicated to OTOP PICS!!!!
Any chance we can actually SEE some? :-) |
RE: OTOP PICS!!!
Robert,
IF yours is consistently pulling check both knife edges and you can mix it out with a start around 4% up elevator which will cure one way, then check the other way too..might need down elevator istead so heps to check..this will also help with horizontal flying too, rudder correction will be just heading change and not cause a dip in the flight path with this correction... How did you end up placing at KCRC contest...Charlie Rock |
