Looking for a Deception
I'm looking for info/kit on the Deception pattern plane that Jim Kimbro flew in the mid-70's. I need a kit (Bridi) or parts and a way to contact Jim about when he first flew the plane. I want to build one and fly it with the Senior Pattern Association. Any help is really, really, appreciated.
Thanks, Rich |
RE: Looking for a Deception
Hi Rich,
Model Airplane News published a construction article on the Deception in 1978. You can still get plans from them for the Deception. I built 5 of them (2 from the kit and 3 from the plans with a few modifications). GREAT flying airplane. Unfortunately I don't think it was designed/flown before 1975 which (if I remember correctly) is the cut-off for senior pattern. There needs to be a class for the pattern designs from 1975 through 1984 or just .60 sized designs post 1975. Good luck, Will B. |
RE: Looking for a Deception
Thanks Will -
yes, the SPA cut-off is 1/1/76. However. I have a note from someone who flew with Jim in Caifornia that he designed and flew it before 1975, so I need to confirm this with Jim. I've ordered the plans from RCM and I've bought the MAN issue (go e-bay) with both the construcion article (9/78) and a later one with a Bridi kit review. Rich |

Deception.
If you are looking for a kit call Graves Hobbies in Orlando and talk to Bill. He has one stashed on the top shelf in his store way in the back along with alot of other old timey stuff. Tell him I said it was there. Have a Deception myself. Last flown in a Nov. 1984 contest in New Port Richey, FL. It has been hanging on the wall ever since. We took first in the old advanced that day and I didn't fly again till 2001 or so. This flying in the box is OK but it sure was nice to "let it loose". I don't think it is SPA legal but it would be nice if it was. AW |

AW (Allie33) -
Wow, thanks a bunch. I just called down there and the old/new kit is in the UPS mail to me today. Nice folks to do business with. I look forward to meeting them when we move back to Florida next year. Gary at the store even knew Jim Kimbro and he'd been in the store a few weeks ago. Now, just gotta get an address, or phone or e-mail for him. The plane is not currently SPA legal, but I'm working on getting the documentation to get it approved. That's why I need to contact Kimbro. If Jim says it was designed and flown prior to 1/1/76, we're good to go. Get yours down and get ready......I last flew mine in 1980 with the Florida Pattern Association. It was lost to a battery failure soon after. Thanks again, Rich |
RE: Looking for a Deception
I've gotten in touch with Jim Kimbro and we'll have the paperwork to make this a legal SPA design shortly. Thanks for the help

RE: Looking for a Deception
Having built and flown 5 Deceptions, I'd love to know what he powered the early versions with. I had YS .60FRs in mine and they loved the power. I know he flew Rossis in the late 70's.
I guess I'll have to build another one :D -Will B. |
RE: Looking for a Deception
The only info I have at the present is Rossi side exhaust (1977 time frame) and then Rossi rear exhaust versions. He used the side exhaust and pipe in the 1977 Nats. I'll ask Jim when I get in better contact with him. He's a little out of touch right now.
Build another one with an OS91 four stroke and come fly the SPA contests with us. I don't have it approved yet, but should be no problem now that I've got a contact with Jim. Rich E. |
RE: Looking for a Deception
I been given a deception plane and need some info on it as i was only given a fuselage and wing
in near new condition by a old r/c member who never got around too flying it.I would like to know if supertigre 90 motor would suit and what size servo's you need and where is the balance point on the wing. |
RE: Looking for a Deception
Hows the Deception coming?
|
RE: Looking for a Deception
Greetings,
The ST90 would be OK, check your ground clearance on the prop. I used th fly with a Webra Speed and Zinger 10 1/2 X 7 1/2, I think. If you really want to know, I will go to the "Wall" and look. As far as the balance point, I was never sophisticated enough to study it. If it flew OK it was OK. Ask Grotto2 about that, he knows all that stuff. Servos? Put 2 in the wing and spend all you can on std size coreless double ball bearing ,and, if you really feel flush, digital. There again, Grotto2 can provide more details. Good Luck, AW |
