Mintor 170 setup
I am going to acquire the OTOP in the classifed section, too good of a deal to pass up, but has a mintor 1.70 on it, any secrets to making it run right? Have read the OS A5 plug is the way to go, etc. What fuel is everyone using? What is a good prop for the motor for good downline braking and constant speed?

RE: Mintor 170 setup
For What It's Worth: One persons experience. Other users may disagree or have different opinions. I have two 3M 1.70s. I have not had good success with two A5s. When I switched to and OS F and an A5, most of my problems went away. I have heard that some people have had good success with two K&B 1Ls. Have not tried that yet. Where I live, with high heat and humidity, I had to lean out the pump about 1/2 turn. Otherwise, the midrange was much too rich. Turn brass screw on pump OUT to lean. Botton end carb setting about neutral. Some people set it on the lean side of neutral. Top end out about 1 1/4 to 1 3/8 turns, depending on weather and pump pressure. Using CP 15%. Lance prefers Magnum, which is not readily available in my area. Prop, APC 18x10 PN.
Go to Aeroslave.com. Lance had lots of good info. Hope this is of some benefit. |
RE: Mintor 170 setup
Hey 308gts79, which version of the Mintor 1.70 do you own? After early 2004, or before? I am curious, because I also live in the Southeast and may need to adjust the punp like you said. Mine is only bench run at this point. I have not had it in the air.

RE: Mintor 170 setup
I just put mine on the Smaragd this week after I had an accident with it last fall, on the Focus not the engines fault mine for not checking the low idle switch first it has run flawless with 2 OS F plugs never had any luck with the A5 plugs wasn't consistant till I changed to the F, I'm running Coolpower 15%, I live in central Indiana and it's been hot high 90's very unusual for us, the one difference this time I'm running the carb off the OS RX and it is perfect not that the original didn't just wanted to see how it done, because it's a dropin fit, I'm running the 17 X 12 apc prop, I'll say this it has plenty of power, much more than the OS RX. Last fall I tried the 15.75 X13 3 blade and it done fine but was only turning about 7000 rpm but it is to much prop for the heat of summer.

RE: Mintor 170 setup
OK thanks, will try the F plugs and the A5s and see what works. Are these engines designed for low nitro or will it run on the 20/20 pattern blends?
|
RE: Mintor 170 setup
20/20 may be to much oil Coolpower is 17% oil.
|
RE: Mintor 170 setup
Ok thanks, I may just use standard powermaster that I can get here, 15% nitro, 18% oil.

RE: Mintor 170 setup
hi i have a lot of experience with this engine , after upgrade the engine with some new parts , i think that is the most powerful engine in the market, and the best transition that you could get, but the engine requiere a lot of cares.
first of all you need to get the engine very cold, thats the secret about this engine , i have 2 mintor 170 in a pair of camodel fantasy, runnnig apc 17x12 at 8,300 rpm one os a5 and os typef, 15% nitro 18% oil and aluminium pipe made by 3m , yo can visit my web page www.marcelozini.com.ar and under eventos you can see a vidio of my plane with that engine.. good flight marcelo zini team jr |

RE: Mintor 170 setup
Steve,
Both of mine have the plastic insulator on the front of the pump. I have used and APC 17x12, 17x13 and an 18x10 PN. The 18x10 is my preferred prop for pattern. For me, the plane flies at a much more consistant speed for up and down lines and thru out the entire sequence. With 15%CP I'm turning 81-8200 rpms. Hope this helps. |
RE: Mintor 170 setup
i just fix the problem with my web page http://www.marcelozini.com.ar/eventos.htm to see the video

RE: Mintor 170 setup
If anybody is looking for a good deal on one of these motors I have one NIB with the header and carbon fiber tuned pipe for $475 shipped...I bought it from Lan Vanostrand at Aeroslave.

RE: Mintor 170 setup
Definitely go to aeroslave.com great info on on the mintor and you can contact lance. He will give you plenty of help via phone or email. I also fly his Aries and LOVE it. I have just picked up 3 mintors and am going to run his new pipe. Very smooth setup. Check with him to make sure you have all the slight mods that he and mintor have been adding to make this engine the powerhouse it is.
Good luck Chuck Hochhalter |
RE: Mintor 170 setup
Hola Marcelo,
How did you reduced your motor temperature? Did you increase the air intake of your fantasy´s belly? Regards, Patricio. |
RE: Mintor 170 setup
Is it still for sale? Is the pipe from Aeroslave or from Mintor?

RE: Mintor 170 setup
There is someone who still has a mintor 170, I have had many problems so that the engine works well, the problem I have is that relanty that stops the engine, to achieve a smooth I fully open the needle and remove fairly low pressure to the pump, change the carburetor with a new one, and I suspect that the bomb with this problem, I can help?
